off to war

January 17, 2013

On the 17th of January 2013, i woke up to discover two unexpected gifts.
I didn't see this coming.
I didn't even think Armin Mersmann would have any knowledge of my blog - it's so little - let alone take the time to write me such a thoughtful, honest and above all, supportive message.
I think i forget sometimes that i'm not the only artist in the world.
That sounds incredibly narcissistic but it's the simple fact that i live with myself every day, i'm only capable of knowing how i feel at all times and i'm not one to share.
I'll put it all over the internet, however.
More making of the sense that is not, my speciality.

I regret not talking to my university friends about the feelings of inadequacy that were debilitating me while i was still in education.
They were probably feeling just the same and would not have been able to fix my problems but perhaps then i wouldn't have felt so small and so alone in my situation.
To be a Fine artist in a contemporary art school is not easy, thus why i fled so spectacularly.
This year i'll be receiving my Ordinary Degree, after 4 years of the university kindly holding my space open so i could complete with my Honours.
Which i can do whenever i wish.
Hopefully they'd reaccept me but i'm not entirely sure DOJ is the place for me.
I'm not even sure if art is the right choice for me and until i know that i won't be returning to any institution of art.
It's really rather hard for someone like myself, who's ultimate goal within university was to receive a 1st and couldn't even bring themselves to start their final year.
It's all i wanted but i was a mess and it shouldn't have been what being an artist at art school was about.
I should have just wanted to create, instead i wanted to win.
Unhealthy but understandable.
I still want that 1st, i think i always will but if i go back to complete my degree, i just want to produce something that touches people.
Something i'm proud of.
But not too proud!

So, thank you Mr Mersmann
I can't tell you how much receiving your message meant to me and how much it's given me to think about.
Happy Birthday for tomorrow and please keep producing your sublime works of art.
They may leave me timid but they are truly wonderful things to behold.

Also, to anyone who is currently at art school or even doing it solo and finds themselves in the same situation as i, message me if you'd like.
I can't fix it but i can empathise.
With bells on.

My other gift of the day was from my Mum.
It's always nice to wake up to a present, especially when you are utterly undeserving because of the ungodly hour you've finally dragged yourself out of bed to attempt functioning like a normal human being.
I won't tell you the hour but it was pretty bad.
The sun was going back down.
Shame, shame on me.
Thanks Mum.
You may be the only one i have but i still kinda think you're the best one.

Feel free to make barfing noises behind your computer screens at my unabashed soppiness!
I care not!

Yeah, i reckon you'd appreciate and participate in my laziness. Sunshine, cool drinks and books. That's what summer should be.

How's the job stress going, buddy? Still feeling at odds with it?

Why in the hell are you going to bed at 9pm?!

Dex said...

I like your idea of summer :)

The job's going okay, thanks Maggot. I'm a bit tired though. In bed at the moment, watching American Dad and feeling sleepy :)

I hope it's still nice in Blair. What's your choice of cold drink on a warm day? Important questions, as always :)

Thanks for always listening to me moaning on about nothing in particular :)

Dex said...

Hi Lilly,

Just thought I'd send you a message from work :)

Actually, I heard on the radio today that there's been more damage to the sub-sea internet cable so I thought I might not be able to access your blog when I get home.

Not that I ever have anything much to say :) Had lunch at Mareel with someone from Psych who was very hungover (she doesn't work over the school holidays - don't want to give you the wrong impression!). Carrot and Coriander soup. And hot chocolate. Even on a day like today (it was very warm again).

Did I tell you that my new office is right next to Mareel? Haven't been to see anything at the cinema in a long time, although I'm in there often enough, volunteering and having lunch. Anything you'd recommend, my go-to-girl :)

Anyway, if I don't manage to talk to you later, have a lovely evening.

Dex said...

Peanut butter and crackers for lunch today :)

And it rained - finally!

Louise Boyd said...

Peanut butter and crackers? My mouth has instantly filled with saliva. Peanut butter for the win!
That was my lunch for a while. But without crackers. Just a spoon of PB (there was other stuff too, don't worry, i'm not mad). That is how much i adore the nutty stuff. Are you a smooth or crunchy kinda guy?
Very important question right there.

It's supposed to start raining here tomorrow. I'm kind of looking forward to it. Just because it'll be a change. I'll whine about the lack of sun and not being able to lounge around outside though. Wah. Methinks that is Summer done and dusted though. Fuck this country. I want a full three month Summer dammit! It will make exercising easier though. So gross working out in this humidity. Bleurgh.

Mareeeeel! Go see Guardians of the Galaxy if it arrives. DO IT!

Good god, i'm so itchy. Rabid mosquitoes have been feasting on my blood. I react so badly to their bites. Did you know that it's how your body reacts to the venom a mosquito/midge/what have you leaves behind in the wound that causes the itchiness, not the bite itself. Some people don't react at all to being bitten. Lucky fuckwits.
Ah well, i'll just itch like a freak for the foreseeable future. Until Autumn arrives at least and i'll be back to 3 layers of clothing and extra socks. Ugh.

Dex said...

Hmm, turns out the internet is still working at home. Yay :)

I wish we could go and see Guardians of the Galaxy together. I think you'd like Screen 2 at Mareel (the smaller one). It's super comfortable. Best experience was watching The Princess Bride in there for the first time with about 2 other people :)

Ugh, why do mosquitoes and the like have to ruin summer?! Although I don't think I react too badly to getting bitten. I think I'm biologically designed to annoy the crap out of you :) Also, I think I did know about the venom. I don't know where I got this knowledge. Probably from you. That's where I get most my interesting facts :)

Cool facts and great film and music recommendations - yep, definitely my favourite person :)

I look forward to rain too. I actually get quite worked up and worried if there hasn't been rain for a while! But sun is nice too. I love the sunny days after a spell of very wet weather :)

Still exercising, you little sweatball :) Really glad to hear that, but just so you know, there's no way I'm letting you outrun me during the zombie apocalypse. I'm certainly not going to be trappled on by an escaping Lilliputty :)

Ps. I have a feeling you're a crunchy peanut butter girl, but I'm not. Or a crunch peanut butter boy for that matter :)

Dex said...

They used to have this trailer at the beginning of all my old Manga videos :)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLyOcru8NkU

Louise Boyd said...

Hah! It's the grunting that really makes that trailer. Gotta love metal and anime. Always works. That episode of Cowboy Bebop with all the hardcore metal almost made my head explode though. Some metal's good. All metal causes aneurysms. Fact.
A guy did actually die from head banging too much. It caused a clot in his brain and he just kicked the bucket. My mum told me that. She tells the best stories :)

I'm almost 80% sure i will have told you those bug facts last year while i was whining about being a walking blood bag. This what happens when you have no life! No new stories! Blargh. Oh well. I've got some wicked bad bites today. The little suckers - har had - bit on both the insides of my elbows. They went straight for the veins! I don't know whether to commend them or wage war? I hate you for not getting bitten. Or not reacting to bites. You motherfudger. Here i am itching like there's no tomorrow and you're happy as larry. Mother. Fudger. I curse you!

Little sweatball?! You better believe it. I wholeheartedly believe that if aren't a sweaty mess at the end of a workout you haven't worked hard enough! My dad used to say that when he was running races, that if he didn't puke at the end it wasn't a success.
...
Sporty people are freaks.
And you're probably right by the way. You will outrun me during the zombie apocalypse AND you have the advantage of being able to drive. All's fair in zombie war. Don't step on me though you jerk. There's wanting to live and just being a douche about it! :)

I dread to ask because it's so damn repetitive of me butttttt.......how's the job going? Settling in yet?
Tell me stuffffffffff! I feed on other people's lives. Just call me a succubus. Feeeeeeeed meeeeeeee!

Ps. Trick question. BOTH KINDS OF PEANUT BUTTER YOU FOOL!

PPS. I think i may watch Dracula tonight. Nothing more enjoyable than watching Keanu try to act. The darling boy.

Dex said...

You have a life! I love it when you tell me stuff! You're so funny and interesting, you make me feel boring in comparison :) I must tell you the same things over and over again. But that's the nice thing about talking to you. I don't feel under pressure to be anything other than myself :)

And thanks for asking about the new job, Lilliputty. It's nice that you ask and I don't mind talking about it at all :) But it's all quite boring really. I go in at 9, leave at 5, take half an hour to eat peanut butter, and spend the rest of the time being fairly useless :) Okay, not really, but I'm trying not to take it all too seriously, otherwise I think it could make me feel a bit crap. I think a couple of other people in our little 'recruitment' team feel a bit the same way. We just have to accept that we're gonna get dumped on pretty frequently by pissed off employees, pissed off managers etc. and that we shouldn't feel as if we're responsible for things going wrong. I mean, we're pretty much the bottom of the food chain with very little responsibility :)

So, best not to worry too much about it. Easier said than done though. Plus I've been on the phones this week. Right in the line of fire :) Basically, we take turns each week to do different jobs. So, no phones next week. Yay :)

Your mum sounds awesome :) But don't worry, I won't be headbanging any time soon. Metal is not really my bag. Although I'll try anything you tell me to :) Talking of mums, It's my mum's birthday on Saturday and she's decided to invite a few friends over, so I will be hiding in my room for most of the night. Ugh, I wish I had en-suite. And a kitchen. And a living room. Okay, I think I need my own place :)

Also, I have to volunteer at Fiddle Frenzy on Sunday and Monday. Hmm, as well as sounding unbelievable filthy, it also sounds a bit like a madness plague :) I wish you were here to convince me not to do these things. I'm sure you'd persuade me :) It's just that the person organising it is super nice and one of the few people I have a lot of time for. I remember she'd just started as a receptionist when I first volunteered for Shetland Arts in February 2010, and now she's helping to organise most of the events! I'm still a lowly volunteer though :)

So your dad used to be The Running Man. I sometimes break out into a run when I'm walking on the path around the loch and I think no one's watching :) Plus I did the 'Around Lerwick' race when I was in Primary School. Finished about 32nd. Bask in my glory! :)

Enjoy Ted in Transylvania :)

Ps. Crunchy and smooth! That's crazy! :)

Hi Lilliputty. Hope you're doing okay. You know you can always tell me if you're not.

Ridiculously heavy rain here today. It's glorious! :) So glad it's the weekend too. I've been working really hard this week. Honestly! We have this rota at work for who is doing what and I got stuck with emails which by all accounts is the suckiest of tasks. And so it proved to be. You blink and about 10 more appear in your inbox. Not great. Still, it won't be forever. I hope. It seems like there's so little time in the day to do the things I want. Then again, I never did them anyway. Maybe I just want to do nothing. Sorry, I'm talking nonsense. I like talking nonsense to you :)

Louise Boyd said...

Hello Fungus,

I'm quite well, don't fret. I've just been surfing the crimson wave and it turns me into a bit of a melancholy bear is all. It's like being a werewolf...but actually that sounds pretty cool so it can't be anything like lycanthropy because menstruation succccckkkks!

Okay, so now i've probably made you uncomfortable and a bit grossed out, lets move onto more interesting topics!

My sister was talking to me about you. Yes, we discuss you, mwuahaha :) Only nice things, i swear. You'd fit in with us, no bother. I mean, you've got pretty good insult game, so as long as you can keep up with our slagging off of each other then you'll be fine :)
Plus you're the only one that'd watch anime with me. Those bastards never will!

So...if your first week was telephones and the second week has been emails...what does the third week have store for our Dexterous Epistolean? Will you have to interact with people? Dun dun dun!

Birthday is so sooooon! >_<

Y'know what i always forget about gift giving from a distance?
...
That you need a sodding box to put it all in!
I'm an idiot. Bow down before me, one and all.

My sister's baking :) Razzleberry Pie.
Consider your face rubbed in it.

Dex said...

Hey Maggot. I'm glad you're okay besides "surfing the crimon tide". You're hilarious :) I'd steal it to use in conversation but for the fact that the chances of me talking to someone about their menstrual cycle are zero :)

Hmm, there seems to be a couple of my posts missing. Not to worry, I'm pretty sure it was only a video of a dog having its belly tickled:

And 'In The Shade' by Best Youth & Moullinex:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7XzzXGAGhY

Y'know. Important stuff :)

Would you believe that I've been in my new job for 4 weeks?! Time flies when you're having fun :) I don't know if people telling you what to do counts as interaction :) I think I'm back on phones next week which kinda sucks (we're only getting this rota thing sorted out), then one more week after that and it's annual leave and our birthday. Yay! :)

I got a box last year from the post office. And had to ask for help to assemble it :) Ugh, I'm the worst gift wrapper in the world (as I'm sure you noticed from last year). I need a crafty sister :)

Hmm, I think I need to find someone to talk to about you. Tell them that you traumatise me by talking about menstruation :)
Actually, I have mentioned you quite a few times to one person. Someone from Psych. I've made her a few mixed CDs would you believe. So it's only natural that your name comes up when we talk about music. I tell her that you slag me off for listening to girlish rubbish :)

Of course I'd watch anime with you! :) But I'm know your sister would watch Studio Ghibli with you at least. Because she's awesome :) If only we'd grown up together...(sad sigh)

Thank you for rubbing my face in pie. Always appreciated :) There's practically nothing in the house at the moment since my parents are in Sandness with the car and it has been raining all day so I can't go to the supermarket. Feel guilty about the pie comment now? No? Didn't think so :) Is razzleberry a thing? Or did you make it up to sound cool. If so, it worked :)

Ernest and Celestine
Box of Delights
Either Way
The Boxtrolls
Wrinkles

The Keeper of Lost Causes
Short Films by Alexandre Philippe
Exhibition

Trou
The Selfish Giant
Manhunter

The must-sees are in bold.

I'm so freaking jealous :|

Dex said...

It was food! Cake! Just a sponge cake with jam and cream but with 6 different colours of icing to represent the 6 trivial pursuit categories. That was the theme of the quiz :) Also, we won without our 2 strongest members. We still can't believe it! :)

Thank you for putting so much thought into the films. You really are my favourite person. Lovely Maggot :) I wish you were here to see them. I really do. And to be on my team for the Screenplay film quiz. It's the big one :) There's no way we're going to win. Honestly, with you there, I think we'd have a damn good chance!

Ps. That's all your presents here. I was going to send them next Tuesday if that's okay with you.

My sister did indeed make doughnuts. And they were magnificent :) Muahahahaha! I thought i'd like the jam ones best because y'know, jam doughnuts are the best doughnuts but i was actually all about the nutella beasts.
She's got magic baking fingers my sister. As does the other one. No wonder i'll never look like Emma Stone! There are other reasons too but i can't blame genetics now can i?

Ugh, Dex, go listen to Vancouver Sleep Clinic. I'm completely in love. It's like a listening to a British Bon Iver.
...
*Melting*

Y'know, i actually think i'd be terrible on any sort of quiz team. I only retain useless knowledge and when is there ever a quiz for that?!
If i'd been on your team, i'd probably have known some stuff but my brain would have shoved it down into some dark, muffled place so the answers were constantly on the precipice of my understanding. My brain's a dickhead like that.
Give us an example of a question though. I'll give it a stab. Without the use of Google of course =/

Have you gone to see any movies yet? I forgot to look for the start date of the festival.
I was supposed to go see Guardians of the Galaxy with my big sis last week but we didn't want to leave Emmers alone for very long, she'd been pretty down. And we could of gone today but it was my turn to be a terrible mood. So my poor big sister has been thwarted at every turn in her attempt to see Chris Pratt on the big screen.
We are awful siblings.

How's stuff anyway? Quietness overtook me yet again so it's been a good few days.
Work any better? What are you manning this week?

I don't know why but it's taking me ages to wrap your presents. It should take me an hour at most but i've been at it for two days now.
Lethargy is such a royal motherfucker. I reckon i'll get it done tomorrow though and send them off Wednesday? Hopefully they'll reach you in time.
If they don't thennnnn...i'm sorry and you can punish me somehow? =/

Speaking of presents, i must warn you about your mixed cd. Somehow when i was putting the case together it became somewhat...squint. No idea how it happened, what with me having a structure layout and everything but ah well, it's still fully functional and looks pretty gnarly, if i do say so myself. Maybe you wouldn't even have noticed and i've just done myself an injustice but well, meh.

Signing off. Gots me a series finale to watch and some internet to play with.

Ps. You still have Chai left?! I'm impressed my dear fellow. Mighty impressed.

Dex said...

2 baking sisters! Wtf! :)

Although someone did bring shortbread into work today. Meh. I'll take it. Ungrateful little bastard that I am :)

I'm sorry to hear that you and your sister have been feeling down this last while. I know that you probably don't tell me a lot of the time when you're feeling sad, but it's something I think about a lot. Hope you get to see 'Guardians of the Galaxy' very soon. I've heard good things.

Screenplay doesn't actually start until the weekend after next. So, after our birthday. And isn't retaining useless knowledge what film quizzes are all about? Believe me, you'd rock! :) When I'm asked to give an example of something like a question, that's when my brain retreats into a deep, dark cave :) But they do a good job of making it a pretty entertaining night. They have a big screen set up in the auditorium so they can do film clip rounds. There's also a soundtrack round, and usually a quotes round. I like the 'rule of 3' where they give you three questions and then you have to find what connects the answers.

Okay, so, a question. What was the name of Marty McFly's band at the beginning of 'Back To The Future'? Sorry, that's the best that I could come up with. I know there's been a million better questions asked. Ugh, my brain.

Work is going okay. Thanks for asking, Lilliputty. However, I am looking forward to my holiday next week almost as much as I've looked forward to anything in my life. Feels that way, at least :) Also, our little recruitment team is dropping like flies. One person is going back to uni, and two people are leaving for other jobs. All in the next 3 weeks. That leaves me and one other person as the only full-time people, plus one part-timer. Still, I'll think about that after my holiday :)

I finally got around to wrapping your presents tonight. Well, when I say wrapping, things come out of fish and chip shops with better packaging. Plus, I gave up on the bigger boxes. Plus, I've left things in the boxes they came in because I always worry about things getting damaged in the post, especially with my packing (I tried to surgically remove all the bits of paper, but apologies if I've missed any). Plus, I ran out bubble wrapping so I ended up scrunching up scrap wrapping paper...hope you feel better about that squint cd now :) You're way too good to me, y'know.

Thanks, Maggot. I'll be sure to tell my friend at Psych about Vancouver Sleep Clinic. She's a huge Bon Iver fan!

I'm hoping to post your presents tomorrow, if I get the chance. I'm planning to take the car to work then go to the post office at lunch time.

Enjoy your series finale! It's The Walking Dead, I'm guessing.

So much trouble. SO MUCH BLOODY TROUBLE.

Also, it's going to take a Herculean amount of willpower on my part not to look inside these boxes. They're staring at me right now. Taunting me with their innards. Can i peek? No. That'd be bad form. I WANT TO PEEK SO BAD! >_<

Okay, i'm done telling you off. For now...

Dex said...

That's mostly down to my bad packing. And I'm sure the boxes are smaller than last year. Maybe :)

Please say sorry to your family for me if they had trouble getting them home. You should have seen me carrying the boxes down to the post office. I had about 3 offers of help from total strangers (I finally gave in and accepted the last one). That's how pathetic I looked :)

Just 2 more days of work. Then 9 days of music, films and junk food. So excited! But you'd be so impressed by the amount of fruit I'm eating these days for lunch at work. I bring it with me in a lunch box, all chopped up. Really just because I don't have time to pop to the shops and buy crap :)

Right, I'm off to do some washing up and then make some tea. I've already hoovered the upstairs. What a fun-filled life I lead :)

Yayyyyyyy holibogs! <- I wouldn't even ask.

So, what's first on the agenda for dear Dexterous? Anime and as many sugary goods you can get your candy claws on?
Or shall you branch out a little? Try something a little more...extravagant? A subtitled movie and tiramisu?

You'll be happy to know that my presents have remained sealed. No peeking for me. It's taking a lot of effort however. I'm very mood swingy just now and every time i veer into sullen or ragey territory the boxes are in danger of being ripped open =/
You're probably wondering if i was one of those kids at Christmas time that was near bursting if the presents weren't being opened the minute my eyes were open.
...
I was.
I received a giant teddy bear one year and launched myself face first into the box as soon as i saw his big squishy face.
There is now end to how much i fucking love presents.
...
I'm a spoiled brat...

Has my parcel arrived yet? I bet it'll wait until Tuesday to get here. Just to put my nerves on edge. Y'know, when my sister took the box to the post office for me they wouldn't let her send it until she told them what was inside. Very strange. It's never happened before. Perhaps they thought i was sending you a vat of meth. And maybe i did...

'alphabeticalised'

Oh dear. I would have tortured you for that as well. Mercilessly. You'd be in tears by the time i'd finished with you :)

My perpetual inelegance is a thing of beauty. I don't even have to work at it. Y'know those girls that seem to float around like ballerinas? One of those i am not. More like the hippo ballerina from Fantasia and with even less grace =/
Oh, to be perfectly postured and admired by all with working eyes in their heads! I shall have to make do with being hobbit-like and instantly forgettable.
...
Smallest and saddest violin is currently playing over my woeful existence.
...
Fuck's sake.

Dex, the interloper has forsaken me :( Haven't seen her for at least a week and now it's getting colder - fuck, it's like November here - our doors will remain shut and she won't wander in unexpectedly for treacherous head scritches and free reign of our beds :( :( :(

Holibogs, indeed. You and your words do cheer me up :)

Actually, I was thinking about doing some shopping for films on Amazon this weekend as a little birthday treat to myself because I'm so deserving :) It's been a nice start to the holidays. I've done nothing today except listen to music and I even had steak for tea that the rentals bought for me. They are in Sandness so the house has been very quiet. Hmm, I could get used to this :)

Your box hasn't arrived yet but don't worry, I'll let you know the moment it does. Also, they asked me the same question at the post office too. Except I wasn't surprised because they did the same last year. All I know is that I will be extremely disappointed if I get a vat of meth :)

I can just imagine you launching yourself face first into a teddy bear when you were a kid. Actually, it would surprise me if you did it again :) Unfortunately, there's nothing in the 2 boxes I sent that I would recommend launching yourself face first into!

I know you would have been merciless with 'alphabeticalised'. And I wouldn't have it any other way :)

Ps. If you were lying on my kitchen floor, I'd try to mend your heart with some tiramisu :)

Hi Maggot. That's the parcel arrived. Thanks so much. Really excited for Wednesday. Cool label too. Feeling kinda special :)

Louise Boyd said...

Sweet jesus, how is it our birthday tomorrow? What the fucking fuck? I'm not readyyyy! I bet you're all laid-back about it, aren't you? Mother.Fudger.

Glad the parcel got there intact. I was only marginally worried it wouldn't arrive...marginally.
Hope you enjoy all the meth i got you! There's some LSD tabs thrown in there for good measure. So you know you're loved and that.

I was in such a foul fucking mood when i woke up. All because i knew i would be older the next morning. My brain's a bit stupid, wouldn't you say? My sister calmed me down though. Wanna know how?
...
She let me punch both her arms. Hard.
Now, i wouldn't call myself violent. Sure, the siblings and i dole out our fair share of horse bites, Morecambe slaps, gut punches, surprise tackles and such but that's all fairly standard sisterly behaviour, not true violence has ever occurred but for some reason punching someone on the arm as hard as i can makes me feel exceptionally better when i can feel my entire skeleton vibrating inside my meat suit - I'm delightful. I can't explain it. Maybe the brief surge of activity-based endorphins supply me with extra serotonin. Who knows, i'm just thankful i've got sisters that let me inflict pain on them whenever i need to.
...
Bit messed up when you see it written down like that =/

I fully intend to nothing tomorrow except watch movies, have the grandparents over before dinner (my gran's birthday too but i'm pretty sure you know that), eat myself to standstill at dinner, annihilate some cake, open ALL the presents and then watch more movies! Like i do every year.
What's your plan, m'dear? Will your parents be back from Sandness? What about ye olde broseth?
I really do hope you like what i've got you. It'd be hard to top last year but i think i gave it a pretty good shot. You'll see soon, anyhow :) I already know what i'm getting you for Christmas. At least one part of it. Forward planning! Suck it, procrastination.

Ah well, i better be off. Gots some Dadmonster tormenting to perform :D

Ps. "New profile picture! You always look so nice in photos. I'm not just saying that. You really do. And you always look good in what you're wearing. In no way are you hobbit-like or forgettable!"

- I could squish you to pieces but it's all liesssss! Terrible lies. You only see the photos i want you to see. The perfectly lit and angled ones where i don't look like something that's just crawled out from under a rock. If you'd seen any candid photos i do believe you would have fled in terror already =/
I win at self-deprecation.

Dex said...

"If you'd seen any candid photos i do believe you would have fled in terror already."

No, you don't. You know I would bother you just as much as I do now. Also, I'd let you punch my arms. Your sisters must love you very much :)

If you want to feel better about tomorrow, just remember that I'm a year older than you :)

I did know it was your gran's birthday tomorrow as well! I may have forgetten your middle names, but I occasionally remember stuff. Very occasionally :)

Actually, I'm going out to dinner at the Lerwick Hotel tomorrow night with my film quiz team. To be honest, I felt a bit bored last year doing nothing on my birthday, even though doing nothing is usually at the top of my list of favourite things to do. Also, I want to eat some really nice food rather than my usual diet of crap. I mean, I went to the supermarket yesterday and bought so much junk food - chocolate mousse, cookie dough ice cream and chocolate pretzels. I think I deserve something a bit better on my birthday :) If you were here though, I'd much rather stay in, watch films, eat cake and open presents. That would be perfect :)

Mum and dad are back from Sandness and they bought me an Amazon gift card. Ah, I love Amazon shopping when I'm spending someone else's money :)

You already know what you're getting me for Christmas?! I have no idea what I'm getting you! But I'm sure I will. Eventually :)

Eat so much cake tomorrow, Lilliputty. You deserve the happiest of happy birthdays. You're my Maggot x

Ps. I felt loved last year when I got pixie sticks :) I just know your presents are going to be perfect. You're an awesome present buyer. Fact!

Pps. Happy Dadmonster tormenting :)

Dex said...

Happy birthday, hugs and happy vibes, my lovely Maggot. I was going to tear open my presents on the stroke of midnight but I'm so sleepy. I think I'll wait until I'm more awake :)

Louise Boyd said...

I opened all my presents in a fit of peak at around 2am =/

You're in SO.MUCH.TROUBLE.

Dex said...

Oh, Lilly...

Dex said...

You've done it again, Lilliputty. This is the best set of presents I've ever been given. Thank you so much. You do care about me just a little bit, don't you? :)

I don't even know what I'm most excited about, although I was hoping so much that you would buy Firefly for me so I'd have an excuse to watch it. Your sister says I can't join your gang until I do :)

And the books! Dragons, Angela Carter and T.S. Eliot! Not to mention Horrible Histories (I used to get them from the School library the whole time). And The Gormenghast Trilogy! I just know I'm going to love it! I promise to make a start on it as soon as my holiday is over. I love that you don't think of me as being beyond all aid when it comes to reading :)

Do you remember the scene in Burton's Batman where the Joker is tearing off all his bandages? That was like me opening the presents this afternoon. Of course, that was probably to do with the fact that the Captain Picard toy was the first thing I opened so of course I got a bit excited. I bet you couldn't resist pressing his button :)

I can't believe this is just our second birthday together. I missed not having you around before that even though I did not know it at the time. Someone to tell me about books and tv and films and music and all manner of awesome things that I've been missing out on. You're the coolest girl in the world. Not to mention the fact that you actually seem to give a fuck about the little things in my life that I'm so fond of. I mean, who else would have given me sparklers and glow stickers?! And that Jurassic Park poster is fantastic - 'hold on to your butts'. Classic. Also the shaving foam :) And the Jurassic Park blackout poetry zine even has a page you can do yourself :)

I've not even mentioned the comics. The covers of 'Rocket Girl' and 'Strange Tales' in particular got me ridiculously excited. You have a great eye for these things! :)

And the mixed cd. I can't wait to listen to it. You are and always will be my go-to-girl. The Mario cover is perfect! It makes me happy just to look at it. Also, I'm keeping the Game Boy label and message. That's something that will always cheer me up when I'm down. High five, Lilliputty. We'd make an awesome adventure duo :)

Lucky Charms for breakfast tomorrow, methinks :)

Louise Boyd said...

:D

So glad you like everything. It's fun buying you stuff. You're just as nerdy as i am but in a slightly different way so while buying things for you i get to discover new things too. What's not to like about that?

Have to say, i was very sore about the comics. I so wanted to keep them for myself but the good part of me defeated the brat inside. I got all of them from eBay as well. There are so many comic stores online that it's kind of daunting so i basically just picked what i thought you might be into. Hope i did okay? And they're all beginnings. I loathe getting comics that are like, number 5 in the series. I want it from the start dammit! That may just be my OCD talking though...Hmm.

Ugh, Dex, i don't even know what to say about my gifts. I wanted them so much and i never expected to actually have them! I sat for about 20 minutes just looking at my little hoard in a state of shock and awe. I'm kind of afraid to open the books. They're too perfect, my grubby fingers would sully them! I really could squish you. The kind of squish that would leave you with crushed ribs and emptied lungs. Thank you, Fungus :)

I'm still giving you a budget from now on though.

Happy Birthday, Dexterous Epistolean :) Here's to many more adventures!

Ps. My mum says Happy Birthday! And thanks for thinking her kid's pretty cool.

PPs. Finally, the Twin Peaks box set is mineeeeeee! :D

PPPs. You're the worst wrapper ever. Buahaha :)

Dex said...

I feel the same way about shopping for you, Lilliputty :)

And it's so nice getting the first issue of a comic book series. Getting a first issue and then building a collection from there is something that is so 'me' :) I'm glad you enjoyed shopping around for them. Going by the titles and cover artwork, your judgement is excellent. Can't blame you for wanting to keep them :)

Buying presents for you is one of my favourite things ever and it sounds silly, but learning about the things you like is kinda like learning a little bit more about you, and I love that.

My sentences are so clumsy :)

"You're the worst wrapper ever. Buahaha :)" - Hehe. Thanks, Lilliputty :) Maybe one of these days I'll surprise you with a neatly wrapped gift. Because we have a lot of birthdays to look forward to together :)

Ps. That's awfully sweet of your mum. Yes, I think her kid is the coolest girl in the world even if she sullies my Amazon history with Supernatural :)

Louise Boyd said...

Already? For some reason i thought you were off until the 9th =/ Not sure where i got that idea from. Oh, wait, i do...my idiotic brainpan!
Maybe the Lucky Charms will soften the blow? I should have sent you more foodstuffs. Shall i fatten you up at Christmas?

Dex...is my Alice a first edition..? Because if it is, i'm going to have to thrash you. I still haven't even been able to take Calvin and Sandman out of their plastic coverings in fear of sullying them =/ I don't know if i could put my grimy paws on a 1st edition Alice without feeling like a barbarian!

I insist you watch Firefly asap. You'll love it, i promise. It's just a live action Cowboy Bebop with some added Whedon awesomeness.

Dex said...

Lilliputty, I wouldn't have traded any of the presents you sent me for more foodstuffs. They were perfect! But I am in the habit of becoming addicted to the foodstuffs you do send - chai latte, rainbow sherbet, popping candy, malteser bunnies, lucky charms... yep, your presents definitely make everything better. Next weekend has already been reserved for Firefly :)

And to answer your question, I believe it's a first edition of the 1954 Mervyn Peake illustrated Alice :)

Ps. No way do you have an idiotic brainpan. You're on my dream quiz team and don't you forget it :)

I was suddenly struck today with how many amazing films I've yet to see! You'll need to educate me. Books, tv and music too :)

Have a lovely evening, Lilliputty.

Louise Boyd said...

Isn't that the second time you've been out recently? Once for your birthday and now tonight? Look at you, being all social.
...
You disgust me =/

:)

I'm gonna give you a gift:

I will not berate you if you don't initially love Gormenghast.
...
And that's a huge deal for me. Because it's perfection. But it's not easy. Verrrrry descriptive and extremely long, especially in the form i gave it to you but totally worth it once you get sucked in. But it took me maybe 4 times to finally get to grips with it. So, yeah, i won't disown you for not loving my desert island book. But i will force you to try until you do. Because you must. And you will.

Ps. dream quiz team?! Consider me honoured.

PPs. A 1st edition. You're officially dead.

Dex said...

I'm going out tomorrow too! To the film quiz. Please don't disown me! You can beat me up though. For being sociable and for generally just being me :)

My presents are going to last me forever, you awesome girl. I haven't even made a dent in the mixed CD. Because I just know it's going to be perfect and I want to give it the attention it deserves.

Ah, Dr Prunesquallor! A most charming fellow. And that must mean you've been introduced to his delightful sister, Irma? Poor Irma. (you'll see).
Ugh, you're making me want to read it again but there's so many other things to read!
Are you enjoying it? I wonder if you'll fall for Steerpike like i did. You're not supposed to but i like a rascal.
Oh goodness, you've got so many wondrous things to come :D
When and if you finish the trilogy you must get the last in the series, 'Titus Awakes'. It's essential.
I really am going to make you bankrupt! Oh, and you have to get the tv series too. It's based on the first two books (the best ones) and has a very special place in my heart. It's where my love of Jonathan Rhys Meyers originated :)

How you doing, Dexterous? Feels like i haven't asked that in a while. Bad friend that i am!

I got a new hoody yesterday. It's moss green and fleecy inside. It's making me very happy indeed.

Dex said...

Yes, I did notice your recent Crystal Castles obsession :)

Don't worry Lilliputty. I'm far too sensible to ever let you bankrupt me :) So please don't ever stop telling me about things dear to your heart that you think I should buy. Because those things actually matter to me. And it makes life so much more bearable :)

Oh no! I haven't met Irma! I'm making even slower progress than you thought :) Let's see. Who have I met so far?

Rottcodd
Flay
Swelter
Steerpike
Lord Groan
Prunesquallor
Fuchsia
Lady Groan
Nannie Slagg

It'll probably take me a couple of months to finish the first book! But I will finish it. And not because I feel I have to. I forgot how much I enjoy reading. Thanks for reminding me, Lilliputty :) I know it's not the most ambitious timescale but I'm hoping to finish all the books you gave me before our birthday next year.

Bad friend? Look at the difference you make and tell me again that you're a bad friend! Maggot :) Anyway, I reckon you care about me a little bit and that's enough :) I hope you know that I care a little about you too :) I'm always here if you need to talk.

And I do have news! My parents are going to the Philippines next week for a month. I always worry about them when they're there but I like having the house to myself too :) I told them that I'd much prefer if they visited my uncle in West Kirby for a fortnight then I wouldn't worry so much :)

Also, I'm still very moody if the house isn't clean :) Ugh, is it weird that I can't relax when I get home from work until after I've vacuumed? There's definitely something wrong with me. And yes, I'm still vacuuming my bed every day :)

I bet you look awesome in your new hoody :)

Ps. I have the vaguest recollection of the tv version of Gormenghast.

Rentals have been away a week now. Arrived at their destination safe and sound. Did I tell you my parents had a farm? Would you like to see some pictures?

There you go. Just uploaded a few on Flickr. Hmm, it looks much nicer than I remember it :) Actually, I think my cousin (the one who lives in Aberdeen) took these.

So no parents. Which means I've been living on pancakes :)

The hot chocolate machine broke at Mareel which completely ruined the middle of my week as I've grown accustomed to getting a hot chocolate and a brown EVERY SINGLE WORKING DAY at 12.30pm. Routine must not be broken!

I'm still making my way through the first Gormenghast books. Steerpike is exploring the rooftops :) Also looking for something to fill the Firefly shaped hole in my heart this weekend. An anime series methinks.

You'll be glad to learn that I've become very unsociable once again. No parties, film quizzes, lunches, conversations. Just work and home :)

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to fret about you just a little. Reminds me that I am a human being capable of emotion :)

Dex said...

Hi Lilliputty.

So glad it's the weekend again :) I don't much like work. Even if it does keep me in sweets and puddings :)

I wish I had some news to tell you. I don't much stray outside my routine these days. Not that I want to. I'm perfectly suited to staying at home, reading a book, watching a film, listening to music. I have a bit more time to myself when my parents are away. If it wasn't for work, which causes me to come home and curse my own stupidity at the top of my voice because I know no one can hear me, I'd be a very happy bunny :)

I like to think that if I had more time, I'd read more books. Our house is filled with books. My dad is the reader in the family. Lots of history and philosophy. He hosts the most unphilosophical philosophy group in the world. They come here for cups of tea and to watch this series:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jOlJZabio3g

Also, they bring biscuits! Which I tend to decimate upon my arrival :)

Hmm, I'll have to read my Horrible Histories at some point :)

Anyway, g'night awesome girl.

Louise Boyd said...

Thanks for the squishes, Budstickers.

I think i'm very nearly normal again. Or at least as normal as a Lilliputian can get. Rough month! Damn my brain. It's such a c*nt sometimes.

I don't know why i felt the need for an asterisks in there. Maybe it's motherly conditioning. She loathes the word and to some extent i do too. I generally don't think it's okay to use female terms as derogatory slurs. As if my sex is something inherently bad. Yuck. Same goes for male terms too by the way, before you get all self-righteous on me :)
It's something i should work on. Probably shouldn't call my sisters vapid whores or slutbags or even bitches or bastards anymore. Ugh, that blows. I'm going to have to look into acceptable defamations and you just know that's gonna get me in trouble.

Sooooooo...Steerpike's up to no good then. Just as it should be. How do you feel about him? He's a very controversial character. I adore him but know that i shouldn't. He's a vile, Machiavellian little monster but man alive, the boy could charm the pants off the Pope.

I've decided to ruin your life. Get a Tumblr my friend. It's tremendous fun and a total life suck. I'm practically giddy with it :)

How's the old job going?
Has the film festival been?
If you're up for it, go see Gone Girl will you? I'm planning on it so you have to too.
Have you recovered from Firefly?
Have you watched Serenity yet?!

"a word on something from you is all I ever need. I'm always thinking 'would Maggot like this'. Because your opinion matters."

My boy, you put too much faith in me. I demand you peruse Amazon or a real life establishment and pick something you would never dream of reading/watching/hearing. You might just surprise yourself.
It's something my Dad and i do. The number of little gems we've discovered is heartening. Of course, it's not full proof. You get some absolute doozies but that's all part of the fun. It's why i'm not entirely comfortable with the idea of everything being digital. There's barely any chance there and how sad is that? Without those exploratory days, i would never have picked up Carnivale and fallen deeply in love. Or Das Experiment. Or Thumbsucker. Or Buffalo 66. Or Tarnation! (deeply disturbing movie by the way, i've never fully recovered).
I realise that's all movies but i can't seem to remember any books or cds right now. What a brain i have.
So, i demand you take a chance on something and then report back to thank or admonish me :)

Ps. Glad your Psych friend enjoyed VSC. If she hadn't i would have judged her harshly :)

Dex said...

I wish you were here to beat me with a stick. That would cure my apathy :)

I did watch Serenity. A few weeks ago. Okay, so there were so many things that deserved to be explored in way more depth, but I thought the film did a damn good job of tying up a lot of loose ends from Firefly. Thank you so much, Lilliputty. I must have loved it because I want to watch the whole series all over again :)

I'm not sure how I feel about Steerpike. I find him curiously admirable in some respects, the way he accumulates knowledge to get what he wants. Is it strange to say I wish I was more like him? :)

I'm very sorry that I failed you with the Film Festival. There were so many good films and I didn't see any of them. I've become very stay-at-home these last couple of months. The effects of work and all that. I find myself more and more drawn into my private little world. It's safer in there. And there's films and books and music. Yay :) So I doubt I'll get to see Gone Girl. But tell me all about it, okay?

Thanks Lilliputty, but I'd be no good at Tumblr. I'm no good at expressing myself online. Plus, there'd be too few hours left in the day if I got hooked. I need to finish Gormenghast and Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood :)

Maybe one day we can explore a bookstore together. A massive maze of a bookshop. We can go our separate ways, get lost for a few hours and find each other to discuss our purchases over a chai latte :)

Have you done much exploring, lately? I'm so glad you're feeling a little bit more like yourself. Has it really been a month? I know that it seemed a long time. But just so you know, I would have waited, no matter how long it took. Because I'm an annoying creep :)

Okay, I'm off to make pancakes :)

Ps. Feel feel to us as many derogatory slurs on me as you like :)

Goodnight Lilliputty. It's the weekend. Yay! I'm looking forward to having a bit of a lie in, but I think I should go into work for a few hours to finish up some bits and pieces. I'm on holiday next Wednesday, Thursday, Friday though :) I've liked the weather here this week. Cold, but a nice, winter morning kind of cold. Wind is starting to pick up though. I'm so boring talking about the weather :) I hope you're doing lots of nice things, Lilliputty.

Goodnight Lilliputty

Parents are back on Friday. They don't sound like they've been doing much on holiday except relaxing on the farm and playing badminton in the garden. That used to be one of my favourite things to do in summer :) Also, apparently the place is inundated with puppies. When I used to go on holiday there, my auntie had quite a few dogs but they were all grown up. 2 in particular, Copper and Champ, were just the best ever. Loved them to bits even if they were a bit overprotective. Couldn't go anywhere without them guarding me :)

Ugh, I've been tricked into making a lasagne to take to someone's house tonight I think I've cremated it :)

Then we're going to see a film at the cinema. 'In Order Of Disappearance'. It's a Norwegian film with Stellan Skarsgard. Did you know he was in 'The Hunt For Red October'? I saw that on tv the other day and I'd completely forgotten. Ramble, ramble, ramble :)

Dex said...

Hey Maggot.

I hope the 'nurse' bruise is the most recent one. I'm not sure if I could be so calm about someone taking my blood. But being a fanged Lilliputian book vampire and all, I suppose you're probably used to the sight of the red stuff :)

And I've finally made it. The final disc of FAB. 6 more episodes and I just know it's going to tear out my insides.

Ps. Of course I enjoy your incomprehensible ramblings :)

Louise Boyd said...

Hey bud,

The nurse bruise is the most recent. They really are the best at it. Doctors always seems to maim me =/ and they're such impersonal fuckers. I spent 3 hours in hospital on Monday and everyone was pleasant but distant. It wasn't until the very end when they wanted me to have some last minute blood tests that i was confronted with a real human being. The phlebotomy department was just closing and the nurse took me in no questions asked. She was lovely and it only hurt ever so slightly. Just as it should. She actually managed to revive a pretty sucky day and i was very grateful. Why can't all medics just treat us like human beings instead of lumps of meat? Maybe i'm being harsh but my dad's in the same sort of profession. He works a 9 hour day and is in constant contact with people and he's bloody amazing. I've seen him in action. He always makes sure people feel at ease. He takes an interest in how they are and does his best to help them. And he gets far, far less credit for what he does that doctors and nurses do. He's even nice to people he doesn't like! Although, to b honest, i'm not sure my dad likes anyone apart from his family. Even then i can fuck him off something rotten :)

Ugh, this is the most i've said to you in ages. Such a shitbag. But it hasn't been a great few months for me. Verrry up and down. Somewhat psychotic at times =/ but i'm blaming that on my ovaries. Little bastards that they are. Plus all this hospital rubbish hasn't been easy, what with the agoraphobia and general anxiety when in contact with other human beings. I'm actually surprised i managed to get myself out the front door or even in the car. Weird what you can do when you have to.

Anyyyyywayyyyy! Who've you been cooking for, mister? Gots yourself a ladyfriend? Bet you do, little charmer :)

Have to say, your Psych mate's mix was somewhat stellar. I've made a playlist of it on Spotify so i can listen properly. Just a shame you can't get a couple of the songs on there. Bloody Spotify. Just not up to snuff is it?
I was particularly impressed to see Peter Broderick on there. He gets quite overlooked but he's bloody spectacular.
Have you made her one in return?

FAB? Took me a minute to decipher that =/ After the panda clip you sent me, i'm definitely gonna have to give it a go. The robot/humanoid is adorable :|
You know what to do when you finish a show?
Watch it all over again, dummy.

I'm tired. Always tired. How've you been doing at work, m'love? Still strapped to a computer or phone at all times?

Taken my command seriously and taken a chance on something out your comfort zone?
Will i have to force something on you?
I do love forcing things on you :)

I would like you to watch My Mad Fat Diary. I know it doesn't really sound like your kinda thing but for people like us, y'know, people with 'issues', it addresses a lot of things that i think we both have trouble with. I find it incredibly comforting to watch and in some ways it's made me think about things differently.
I know i'm probably wayyy more fucked up than you - or at least you don't let the crazy out as much as i do - but i think you might get something from it too.
Also, it's just a bloody good show with some stellar 90s music.

Right, i'm off to get fed and then indulge in some serious Peaky Blinders watching.
Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy? Nothing short of majestic!

Ps. I'm still slobbering over all my birthday presents. Thank you, Dex. Really. You're, just, honestly, wondrous.

Dex said...

I find it very easy to believe that your dad is amazing at his job and actually gives a fuck about how people are feeling. I wish I could say the same for myself. Does that give you some kind of hint about how work is going? :) It's really nice of you to keep asking though and I'm glad you do. I just don't want to let the negativity spill out on here. Because that means the bad guys have won and they've crushed my spirit. And I'm not having that. Not when I'm talking to my Maggot :)

I also find it very easy to believe that you can piss your dad off something rotten when you want to :)

I'm glad there are people like that nurse and your dad in this world. Geniuinely nice people who break up that vicious circle of people being shitty to one another. Plus anyone who make your day a little less sucky is okay with me :)

Don't worry about radio silence :) I guess you not writing so much is a bit like me writing too much. We deal with our problems in different ways and I think we balance each other out. You still mean as much to me now as you ever did. Or even more :) You go through a ton of shit and you always come through acting like the sarcastic little so-and-so that I love so much. Y'know, the one that keeps me from drifting off into apathy. If that's what you mean by fucked up, then I'll take that over normal any day of the week :)

You've totally sold me on My Mad Fat Diary! Stellar 90s music! That's all you needed to say :) But you're right about the issues. I'm glad I can tell you these things :) And I love having things forced on me. By you. Hmm, that sounds somewhat wrong :)

Be warned, I'm going to give you a full review of FAB (sorry about the confusing abbreviation). I'm really not expecting you to watch it because it is very long and there is so much stuff out there to watch but I want to tell you about it because... well no reason except that I want to talk about it with you. It's certainly not perfect and would not appeal to a lot of people. But Alphonse Elric (the boy whose soul is bonded to the suit of armour) is adorable! :)

I'll tell my friend Sarah that you liked her playlist. She'll be delighted as she's the one I'm always raving to about your taste in music. I've made her a couple of mixes over the last year. The first one was kind of a leaving present when I left Psych because she's someone who has always looked out for me and we would sometimes talk about music when we were on our own. One of those damn annoying genuinely nice people like your dad :) Oh, and sadly, the lasagne was only for my film quiz team. Nothing to report on the relationship front, I'm afraid. I'm feeling way too selfish at the moment to pay much attention to anyone else :)

Enjoy Peaky Blinders, Lilliputty. Try not to turn into a puddle over these actors :)

Ps. I love my presents too! Gormenghast is being slowly but steadily devoured. And 'The Magic Toyshop' will be next. I was looking through the comics again today. You really do have an amazing eye for artwork. You chose some really good names too. For example, Steve Englehart and Marshall Rogers (The Madame Xanadu comic) did one of the most famous runs ever on Batman and arguably the definitive Joker story, The Laughing Fish.

And I'm super prepared for Halloween. The Evil Dead trilogy and The Nightmare Before Christmas :)

Louise Boyd said...

Oh, don't worry, i've got spades full of petty ammunition stored away. It'll last well into my ghosthood.

Have to say, Dex, i'm impressed by your Halloween movie choices. Can't really beat those two. Although just remember that TNBC also counts as a Christmas movie so don't leave it out in a couple of months time. I certainly won't be.

Not sure what i'm gonna be watching on Friday. I'm making a mental list of possibilities though. Cabin in the Woods is floating around in there. Drag Me To Hell. Tucker and Dale vs Evil. Frankenweenie perhaps? I might bust out Cabal or The Company of Wolves for some less up to date horror but i think i'm going modern menace this year.
So many options! Fucking love Halloween.
Have you been stocking up on candy?
Candy? I know. I don't usually approve of americanisms towards sweets but they kind of have dominion on this holiday so it seems appropriate.
My sister keeps on buying variety packs. I've already eaten way too many mini refresher bars and double dip lollies to last me a lifetime.
...
That's bullshit. I could devour variety packs until the end of time. Miniature food. Gotta love it :)

Dex said...

I was really hoping you'd approve :) You should definitely be the one making up the film seasons on Film 4 :)

Mini refresher bars! You have the best sisters ever! Mini food! Yay! And of course I'm stocking up on 'candy'. It's what I do. All year round :) Refresher squashies, fizzy strawberry pencils, rainbow belts, strawberry laces, flying saucers, anything with sherbet. And damn you for getting me hooked on popping candy :) But now I can't think about anything except double dip lollies. Me want now!

Also, I bought Halloween cookies from Mareel for my lunch. That's probably an americanism too. Calling a biscuit a cookie :) All I remember is the taste of gingerbread and that they were covered in orange and black icing. But they were pretty good :)

Enjoy Halloween and your films, Lilliputty. And dress up as Mona The Vampire :)

Ah, the early flush of a burgeoning friendship. It always starts with late nights and constant interaction. I've never been very good at maintaining it. I think that's perhaps why all my friends fled from me like i had the plague after we left high school =/

Nice to see you're developing a friendly wee group though, mister Fungus.
They even managed to get you cook for them! A minor miracle. You didn't poison them all did you? For kicks?

How'd it go feeding your brother's face on his day of birth?
End happily with Evil Dead 2?
I can't remember, have you seen the trilogy before?
My Halloween weekend hasn't been very successful. I only managed to watch The Cabin in the Woods and Drag Me To Hell, which i only half watched due to Tumblring and knowing it practically off by heart.
I let my favourite holiday down :(
I was all set to make Halloween cookies as well and didn't even get around to buying the ingredients!
They were going to be shaped like ghosts and headstones :( :( :(
Sob.
Procrastination for the nation.
Oh well, maybe i'll make Christmas cookies instead. Christmas ghosts are cool right?

Is it egotistical to have been listening to my own Halloween mix since friday?
I can't stop. It's so good!
...
Definitely egotistical.
But it's reawakened my love for Cocteau Twins so i'm cool with being big-headed. Music and vanity, they go so well together.

Age old question: how are ya, Dexterous?
Keeping okay?
I get the feeling the job's not going perfectly and you don't wanna burden me with any details?
That's stupid. I'm here to be complained at. It's okay as long as it isn't about me! :)
So...spill, spill your guts!

I thinkkkkk... i'm going to rummage around in the kitchen for a double dip lollipop before dinner. Because i'm a heathen but an adult heathen so i can do what i want :)

Later, buddddddstickers.

Ps. My sister has been chopping onions. My eyes are going to fizz out of my skull. So much tearage >_<

Dex said...

Yeah, they're quite a nice bunch of people :) But I don't do constant interaction either. Meet up once a month for the film quiz and perhaps the odd meal. That's enough for me at the moment. And maybe that's okay.

And since we're being egotistical, my lasagne was damn good :)

So, still addicted to Tumblring? Isn't it great when you get hooked on something that isn't going to kill you. Or maybe it will. Who knows. Muahahaha :) Anyway, I bet you're still finding plenty of time for films, music and books though. And your mix makes up for all your supposed holiday shortcomings. Not to mention the fact that you wore Halloween socks and a Batband :)

Nope, never seen any Evil Dead until last weekend (I'm a failure as a human being, I know). Evil Dead 2 was so gloriously ridiculous. Or ridiculously glorious. I haven't quite decided yet :) I've seen Cabin In The Woods before though. I even own a copy. Because you told me to buy it. And I always do what you tell me (that's My Mad Fat Diary ordered)

One of these days, I'm most certainly going to spill my guts about work and then you'll be sorry :) I never thought it would be as bad as it is though. I feel like the most hated person in the council. The amount of hostility I have to deal with on a daily basis is a bit scary. So there. No guts, but a little bit of blood and tears :)

You don't need to worry about me though. So long as you're okay. That's most important. Lots of hugs and happy vibes, Maggot.

Oh, and I get the impression that you spend most your time hovering around your sisters while they're preparing food, waiting to steal the odd morsel :)

Ps. Yes, Christmas ghosts are cool! (even though you didn't make them, I like to imagine your Halloween cookies. Or maybe I just like thinking about cookies)

Pps. I have a box of Celebrations and a bag of Sour Skittles on my bedside table for some reason. And I'd still slam your face into the fridge door for a double dip lollipop :)

I just ate lasagne. Turkey lasagne to be exact. We're experimenting at the moment. It was gooooood! I may like it better than traditional lasagne and that's not something i thought possible.
It's kinda cool having good cooks for sisters and yes, i do hover for scraps. Like a homeless ghost. But can you blame me? The most i'm capable of making is french toast and minestrone soup and this satay noodle thing which is basically just noodles in peanut butter.
...
Heaven basically but if that's all i ate, i reckon i'd die of heart failure fairly quickly =/

Hmm. Okay, you don't have to tell me what's going on at work, just as long as you know that you can if you ever want to.
I do wish to bash anyone that's being cruel to you. You're a precious creature and i won't stand for it!

"I like to imagine your Halloween cookies."

I laughed quite hard.
Just saying.

Soon Evil Dead and it's sequel are scored off the list. When's the end of the trilogy happening? Or has it already happened?!
If it hasn't then all i'll say is you'll love it. It's so awful but truly magnificent.
If it has already been watched then... "This is my boomstick!"

Holy fuck, i love Bruce Campbell. He truly is the B movie king. It's always awesome when he randomly pops up in things like the Spider-Man movies and The Majestic (lesser known Jim Carrey movie), Oz the Great and Powerful, The X-Files! and i think he's been in Burn Notice and Psych lately but they're not really my thing.
Oh! He's gonna be in this really shitty looking movie i'm desperate to see called, 'Welcome to Purgatory'.
Ash J Williams and battling angels? Hell. Yes.
It's even got Peter Stormare and Danny Trejo starring. What's not to love?
I'd so have Bruce Campbell's horror show babies.
...
Do i want to have too many people's babies?
Do i have a problem?
I don't even want babies!

This is not good.
I'd actually rather give birth to kittens than a child =/
That's odd, right?

I'd better go think over my priorities and possibly my mental state...

Ps. I've got another double dip lollipop :) Om. Nom. Nom. :)

Dex said...

Slightly jealous of your sisters, girlface. Turkey lasagne sounds delicious :) Do you know how many times my sibling has cooked for me? Once. About 10 years ago. He brought home a lemon meringue that he made at college :)

I've never had french toast! It's right at the top of my list of foodstuffs that I've never tried but am sure I'd love. You can make me french toast and peanut butter noodles one of these days, okay. And I could make you lasagne and pancakes. Yeah, we wouldn't last very long :)

Can your sisters make baked alaska? That's on the list too :)

Nope, haven't got around to 'Army Of Darkness' yet. This weekend. Does he still have his chainsaw and shotgun? Is that his boomstick? You just got me super excited for it :) Hopefully all your Bruce babies would have his glorious chin :) I didn't know he was in the X-Files. Must have missed that one. I used to quite like that show. X-Files and Buffy, believe it or not. My sibling used to buy the boxsets (he had pretty good taste in tv back then). Actually, I was really into Buffy for a little while. I even had a Watcher's guide :) But, for some reason, I stopped watching after season 2. Maybe I was too traumatised after Jenny's death :) I definitely feel I missed out. I think I remember reading on your blog that it was between seasons 2 and 3 for the best. I should definitely have kept watching.

Now I want to see Welcome To Purgatory too. What would I do with you to tell me about this stuff :)

"I like to imagine your Halloween cookies." - hehe, I doubt I could get away with saying that in real life :)

"Okay, you don't have to tell me what's going on at work, just as long as you know that you can if you ever want to." - Nudge. You know that the same goes for you, if ever you want to talk, okay.

Ps. "I'd actually rather give birth to kittens than a child" - I don't know why but, coming from you, that sounds completely normal :)

Pps. One of these days, your double dip lollipops will be mine. Muahahahahahaha

Lilliputty, I am this close to finishing the first of the Gormenghast trilogy. A chapter a day, without fail, for the last couple of months. You did say I might find it quite difficult to get into, and I know my feeble brain has missed so much, but I love the world Mr Peake has created. It's a world in which I can completely lose myself for a little while. Thank you so much.

Louise Boyd said...

You're so welcome :)
I'd force everyone i'd ever met to read it. If only once. It's my favourite world and i can promise you that by the end you'll be mourning it just like i did.
I'd take a break though, after Titus Groan. Just so you don't get Peake fatigue. You have to soak up every last molecule of Gormenghast otherwise it's not worth it - possibly a little dramatic but... would you expect anything less?

Been so quiet the past few days. Sorrrrrrry. Had birthday build up to contend with. The eldest sibling aged yet again so craziness ensued. The joy!
Em made a damn fine cake for her. A salted caramel cake with a brown sugar sponge. Hot damn, it was so good.
...
Hate me?

For sure.

Ps. Nice catch. It is indeed the Gormenghast Trilogy. Just one of the copies we have in the house :) I'm still holing out for an illustrated set but i'm far too cheap at this point in my life.

^ this does not mean buy me a copy, you insane boy.
Which reminds me, you've got a Christmas budget. Me too, before you start to feel persecuted.
I'm gonna say £25 - £35 maximum.
Okay?
Why am i asking?

Also, 'Titus Groan' can now be marked as read. I loved it so much. Can't believe I'm still only a third of the way through Gormenghast. Your birthday presents are going to last me forever. Those are the best kind :)

But now it's time for some Red Dwarf - 'Tell them we're coming aboard. By God, we'll rescue these fair blooms or my name's not Captain A.J. Rimmer, Space Adventurer' :)

Louise Boyd said...

I was never a huge Red Dwarf fan. I appreciated it alright. It was real funny but i dunno, something never entirely clicked. Maybe i was still too young and emo back then. The horror.

My brain feels squishy today and i think i'm turning into the She-Hulk. Such bad mood swings and a ridiculously short fuse right now. And it can't just be hormones because this is practically all the time, not just once a month =/
Ugh. I bet my ADs aren't as effective anymore. Being crazy is exhaustinggggggg.
Christmas is gonna be... interesting if this continues.

Dex said...

Well, you're always nice to me. I'm lucky to have a friend like you :)

But I'm glad you can tell me a little bit about what you're feeling sometimes. Really glad. Because I think about that a lot.

And so you feel a little less crazy, I'm about to hoover my bed. Like I do every night before I go to bed. Otherwise I can't sleep properly. Another thing I do is run my hands under taps to make sure they're off, even though I can see that there's no water coming out :)

Louise Boyd said...

I take it back. Red Dwarf's a classic. They were doing a marathon of it on Dave today. My sister was watching and i got suckered in.
I'd never realised that Fry from Futurama is basically Lister.
Do you like Futurama? You must, surely?

'And so you feel a little less crazy, I'm about to hoover my bed. Like I do every night before I go to bed. Otherwise I can't sleep properly. Another thing I do is run my hands under taps to make sure they're off, even though I can see that there's no water coming out :)'

I'd call you straight up bananas for this but honestly, i do crazy shit like this all the time. I think my craziness is lazier though. I couldn't be bothered to vacuum things all the time. Ugh.
Give me some of your energy dammit. You don't need it all!

Dex said...

I do like Futurama! :) At least, the original run.

Do you remember Morbius the vampire from the 90s Spider-Man cartoon? He had these 'suckers' on the palms of his hands that he used to drain people of their blood. That would be a good way for you to steal my energy :)

But honestly, I don't know if it's energy. I just have a tough time relaxing :) I wish I had your ability to devour books and tv series. You'll have to teach me one day. Or keep demanding that I watch and read things. I like when you tell me stuff like that :) My Mad Fat Diary will be watched very soon!

Oh, and I was helping out at Wordplay book festival in Mareel today. I know. Another festival :) Well, when I say helping out, I basically spent the whole afternoon sat at a table, drinking hot chocolates. Maybe my best volunteering experience ever :)

I hope you have a lovely night doing some of your favourite things, Maggot.

Ps. Did you get that Pac-Man ghost lamp the birthday before last? It looks amazing! :)

Goodnight Lilliputty, you book vampire.

I've nearly finished re-reading 'Heroes & Villains'. Thank you for introducing me to Angela Carter :)

Ps. One of your Christmas presents arrived today :)

Louise Boyd said...

Holy shit, already? I should really get my act together.
How is Christmas so soon?! =/

Angela Carter is the most beautiful creature. It makes me so sad she's gone. So young as well! Who knows what other wonders she would have produced. So sad.

You should read The Passion of New Eve. It's strange and wonderful. And for that matter, get some of J.G. Ballard's short stories. They're like reading an entirely different universe.

So many books, so little time.

Dex said...

I know it's way too soon, but I'm looking forward to Christmas. 11 days off work :)

Thank you very much for the book recommedations, Lilliputty. I shall definitely seek those out :)

Have a lovely night. Reading, watching and whatnot :) I guess I'd miss the daylight but I wish I was a night creature sometimes.

Dex said...

Not that I ever watch films in the cinema these days but Mareel is showing Die Hard, Ghostbusters and Blade Runner over Christmas. I'd totally go and see them if you were here :)

Louise Boyd said...

Go and see them you numbskull! Ahhhhh!

Dex said...

I'm a hopeless case. I bet you have a whole season of Christmas films planned out in your head :)

I remember the plastic dust jackets for library books too!

Dex said...

Do you know what I wish I had in the freezer? Those ice cream lollies with the red popping candy shells :)

Louise Boyd said...

What magic do you speak of?

Dex said...

I think it was this, or something very similar.

I don't know why I want one so much. I do think about ridiculous things :)

Louise Boyd said...

I want one...

And a Sno Ball.
My Dad and I are currently watching Zombieland for the thousandth time and we just got to the Sno Ball truck.
Chocolate cake filled with cream and covered in marshmallow and coconut?
Oh yes. Oh hell yes.

Nom :)

Hi Lilliputty

I was at work today and now I'm at Mareel, tearing tickets. I ordered a hot chocolate at the cafe and I had to say something because they forgot to make it. I felt so awkward. And they didn't make it for me to go like I asked. I was too embarrassed to ask them to change it so I just sat their on my own, drinking my hot chocolate and pretending to read a leaflet :)

I may pick up some junk food on my home and watch a film. That sounds like a good idea. Junk food and film watching. I hope that's what you're doing :)

Louise Boyd said...

Uft, you're definitely my missing sibling. I'd have done just the same =/ Such cowards we are! Although, you're one up on me, i usually make my sister order. Mega coward. It'll be written on my tombstone. With the other stuff. Do i think about my headstone too much?

Junk food and a movie? That's not a good idea. That's the only idea.

I'll probably go watch 'Lawless' with the fam. We kinda like that movie. You'd never know what with us having watched it more than 4 times already...
But come on? Tom Hardy in a cardigan? What's not to like?

What movie's on the Fungus agenda?
I miss watching movies.
I was in a shitty mood last week so i holed up in my bedroom and watched 'The Dream Team'.
First time in ages i've done that and it was awesome :|
You don't really get to watch what you want in the living room. Everyone's too fussy so we usually end up watching something boring or seen before. It blows.
I'm not allowed to disappear into my bedroom though. It's not good for my 'state of mind'. Ugh.
Ugh. Ugh. Ugh.

Just listened to this Beatle's cover album:

http://open.spotify.com/album/6BCMlzQPvJghplWIUyL4gR

Made me sad. So uninventive. If you're gonna cover The Beatles you've gotta put some panache in it!

Dex said...

Yup. You're definitely my Maggot :)

Tonight? Something comforting and familiar - Addams Family Values. Love that film so damn much :) I should watch something different but when I watch my favourite films, it's like being safely wrapped up in a warm blanket. Of course, that could also be due to the fact that I'm usually wrapped up in an actual warm blanket when I'm watching these films :)

I'm sorry, Maggot, that I never ask how you are. I just assume you'll tell me. And I'm very glad when you do :) I like hiding in my room and feel like I need to be on my own a lot but I think it's really nice that your family look out for your 'state of mind'. I know you'd do the same for them because you're awesome like that. Although it's a pity they won't always watch the films you want. Maybe you should have a rota :) I'd totally have watched 'The Dream Team' with you. Never seen it before but Michael Keaton. Yay! If we're talking about the same film :) Don't know if I'd watch Lawless with you though, watching you drool over Tom Hardy and his cardigan. That I can do without :)

Actually, my parents are in Sandness this weekend so I get the living room all to myself :)

And just so you know, I'd make you watch the same old boring films again and again. Buahahaha :)

Ps. "Do i think about my headstone too much?" - way too much :)

Pps. - I love your insect jumper!

Dex said...

Hmm, not sure what you'll make of these shoegazer covers of Beatles songs.

It's great isn't it? Who wouldn't want a sweatshirt covered in creepy crawlies?
Well, maybe an entomophobic =/
I know i wouldn't want to wear something covered in squid or sharks or oompa loompas! Bleurgh, the horror.

Did you watch AFV?
I fully understand it being a comfort movie. Not for me but i can see why. Such a shame that Christina Ricci hasn't quite lived up to her potential. I did really enjoy her show, Pan Am when it was on. It was incredibly silly but enjoyable silliness. Got cancelled though. Not many people were into Pan Am air hostesses as spies. Crazy.
I've just been reading that a tv production of From Hell, the Alan Moore novel - and the terrible Johnny Depp movie that i kinda love - is being put into play. And The League of Extraordinary Gentleman. I'm quite intrigued because i loved the comics - the few i read - and the move adapt was beyond terrible so if someone could do it well? I'm so on board. It's just a shame that with all these things the only people i want to produce them are off doing other things. Like Del Toro, Joss and Bryan Fuller. Was :(
Could be kinda fun to get Dennis Kelly now that Utopia's been cancelled. Good god that totally broke my heart. You may noticed my little outburst on here =/
My love of tv may be out of control, if such a thing is possible.

I've seen a lot of Red Dwarf this weekend. Must have been some marathon or something. They had the parallel universe episode on. Watching Rimmer's female counterpart hit on him is a thing of beauty :D

"I'd make you watch the same old boring films again and again. Buahahaha :)"

No way. We'll take turns, jerk. I'll give you one of your favourites for a new movie of my choosing. Best of both worlds.

Dex said...

I did watch Addams Family Values. And it was awesome. Wednesday is a delight :) I just realised that I don't think I've seen her in anything since Sleepy Hollow! Of course, I'm rubbish at seeking out films. Never saw Pan Am but air hostesses as spies sounds like something I'd watch :)

Entomophobic - new word for me. Thanks, girlface :) I always think of this quote from General Melchett in Blackadder when I'm given a fun, new word:

"I like it and I want to use it more in conversation" :)

I was brought up on things like Blackadder and Red Dwarf. The latter is about the only thing my family enjoyed watching together. My dad would always bring back a videotape if he went away for a meeting. We still have them lined up on a shelf in the hallway even though we have them on dvd. Hoarders :) Tough to choose the best series from the first 5. The 6th is good too but a notch below in my opinion. Hehe, Rimmer and his female counterpart. So many great Rimmer moments, including that one. Definitely my favourite crew member - "I just want you to know that over the years, I've come to regard you as... people I met". Sorry, I just like quoting random Rimmer lines :)

That's very interesting news about the Alan Moore adaptations! Please, please, please let them do a good job. Way better than Watchmen, From Hell (sorry Lilliputty) and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen films. Damn these people wasting good source material! Actually, I think I could maybe enjoy From Hell if they'd called it something else and pretended it wasn't an adaptation of the graphic novel :)

I love that you watch so much tv and you have all these opinions :) And I think you like the best things. If they made tv especially for you, I think the quality would be amazing. And they wouldn't cancel things like Utopia. At least if Mr Del Toro and the rest are working on new projects, there should be some good stuff around the corner.

I know you don't like me saying this, but you always look so nice in your photos. I love your clothes too. Why do you have such good taste in everything? Even the crap you watch is the best kind of crap :) You don't need to write a lot of words about something to convince me that it's worth paying attention to. You simply make them worthwhile by saying so.

"Why do you have such good taste in everything? Even the crap you watch is the best kind of crap :) You don't need to write a lot of words about something to convince me that it's worth paying attention to. You simply make them worthwhile by saying so."

One of the nicest things anyone's ever said to me about me o_o

^ using old school emoticons makes me feel like such a dork but how else can i convey emotion?
Oh yeah, through good writing. Fucksticks.

Currently listening to: The Band 'The Weight'

I think... you should make a Christmas mix for your buddy at Psych (if you're not already).
It'd make her day i reckon.

This is all becoming a little disjointed. I blame being chronically tired my entire life and lack of sugar. And this weird pain in my sides. It's like i've got a permanent stitch. Ugh. Bodies are bizarre and useless.

Ps. I really enjoyed your mate's playlist. It was a little samey throughout but not everyone feels the need to jump from electro to pop to grunge all in one sitting like me =/ Most people don't have musical Tourettes...

Dex said...

The emoticon was enough :) And you said 'fucksticks'. Love you, girlface. I wish that I wasn't so far away so I could buy you sugary goods. You're way too nice writing messages to me when you should be taking care of yourself. And they're not disjointed at all. Well, no more than mine :)

I'm now going to have to buy the second series of My Mad Fat Diary, damn you :) It broke me up a few times, but it was just so funny and different. And the last few minutes with Champagne Supernova and What's Up melted my poor, frozen heart. You're going to call me a complete cheeser, but I've always had a soft spot for What's Up :) A bit sad to know that Tix won't be returning though. She was awesome.

That's so weird that you just mentioned The Band. I was totally unaware of them (I know, I suck) until this morning but I looked up The Last Waltz because someone at Mareel is having a leaving party on 14th December and they are going to screen The Last Waltz. I'm not sure that I'll go because it's not actually taking place at Mareel but in a place called Quarff Hall out in the country. Someone is going to bring a screen and a projector. I feel so ridiculous, but I haven't been out of Lerwick for quite a while now and I'm not all that keen on breaking my routine. Or maybe I'm just lazy. Yeah, definitely lazy :)

I was thinking of making a playlist for Sarah (my psych friend). I thought it would be nice because I haven't seen her for quite a while. She's always so busy with work and she goes away a lot to visit her boyfriend and friends in Edinburgh and Glasgow, so she's always saying that she never has time to find new music. But I think she'd prefer your taste in music to mine. You're so varied in what you listen to that I bet you could make a playlist for anyone and they'd always find something to love about it. I wish I had musical Tourettes :)

I really hope you do something nice for yourself this evening, Lilliputty, like watching a favourite film or reading a good book. Squish.

Goodnight Lilliputty.

I know it's ridiculously early but I need a lot of sleep these days :)

I wish my dreams weren't so exhausting though. Last night, I was being chased around a massive boat, hiding in cabins, running from deck to deck, scared for my life that I was going to get caught. Like a big game of hide and seek, but not as fun as that sounds. Hmm, I do talk nonsense a lot of the time :)

Have a lovely sleep and nice dreams, Lilliputty. Of cats. Or pudding. Or cats and pudding :)
