Post-birthday indulgences:
For the longest time i've wanted my own copy of Elidor but specifically with the Charles Keeping illustrations...because he was a god among illustrators.
My mum has a hardback version that is much beloved and i would never dream of putting my grubby, page-corner-folding mitts on it.
So i got my own.
This is by no means a good copy.
It's a paperback from the 70s.
It has stained edges and spine damage.
But it's all the better for it.
I have a disquieting fondness for old books.
They have a specific scent that just cannot be recreated in the freshly printed.
Yes, i'll admit it, i'm a book sniffer.
A lowdown dirty book sniffer.
And i have no shame.
Don't leave me alone in a library.
It gets disturbing.
'Based on the fantastical illustrated magazine Heavy Metal, producer Ivan Reitman combined original artwork and stories by five of the world's finest adult animators to create the otherworldly tale of a glowing green orb from outer space that spreads destruction throughout the galaxy.
Richly and lavishly drawn, Heavy Metal includes the science fiction writing of Dan O'Bannon [Alien, Total Recall], the character voices of John Candy and Harold Ramis and a pounding soundtrack by Black Sabbath, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth and many more.
Highly imaginative and full of surprising special effects, Heavy Metal sets the standard for alternative contemporary animation. An intoxicating experience not to be missed!'
I've seen so many bad reviews for this cult classic but that only made me want to see it all the more.
Cult love = must see.
And would you look at that soundtrack.
What's not to love?
'One of the most ambitious and inventive films from legendary animator Ralph Bakshi, Wizards is a dazzling fantasy adventure. Set on a post-apocalyptic Earth where technology has been outlawed after nuclear disaster, the film follows the story of Avatar, the kindly, eccentric sorcerer-ruler of Montagar, a rainbow paradise inhabited by elves and fairies. Avatar's evil brother Blackwolf dominates Scortch, a bleak land of goblins and wraiths.
When power-hungry Blackwolf attacks Montagar, Avatar, accompanied only by a spirited young woman and courageous elf, must enter the darkness of Scortch to save his world. Stunningly designed and thrillingly dramatised, this unforgettable cult classic is presented in a breathtaking new high-defintion transfer.'
Honey, i'm home.
Technically, this was a pre-birthday present to myself but i haven't worn it until now.
My sister's already made a lewd joke towards my apparel and i'll be expecting some more when the rest of my family returns home.
...
What the eff was i thinking?
For those in the know, they'll recognise this not as a comment on my, erm, breastplate? but the logo of the infamous New Orleans record store that sadly died a corporate death.
Change sucks.
But vintage t shirts and nostalgia are worthy of two very enthusiastic thumbs up.
Fine holiday fun!
