Ps. There's more Banana Bundt cake.
...
I still want one of your doughnuts.

Dex said...

Sorry for the lack of detail :) I went for the Berliner doughnuts. Basically normal doughnuts with a mixed berry filling and coated with icing sugar. I love anything dusted with icing sugar :) I'm sure there not a patch on the Banana Bundt cake though! Supermarkets vs your sisters = no contest.

Why are you so awesome?! I bet everywhere you look in your room, there's 500 interesting things going on :)

Was it nice weather in Blair this weekend? It feels like the last few days have been the first time I have seen the sun in about 6 months! Pity it was still so windy (actually managed to wash and dry my bed linen by lunchtime, like one of the cool kids). Maybe a sign that summer is on the way :)

Louise Boyd said...

I did wonder when we were meant to have the inspection for the boiler, what whoever was coming to do it would think when they stepped into my room.
It is stuffed with things and to me it's perfectly normal but to someone else would it be bizarre? Like walking into a nerdy dragon's den or completely off-putting?
Rooms are so personal 0_0

It just turned to Spring, you crazy person!
But yes! We've also had much sun. I've slept through most of it, though =/
I gotta stop doing that.
I can't wait for Summer. Even if it's not epic, I just want warmth and sunshine and green *-*

Ps. Berliner doughnuts sound magnificent. I'm going to eat toast and Summer Pudding jam in their honour, tomorrow :)

Dex said...

Bedrooms should be like yours - little kingdoms :) I do wish mine was more organised though. It's full of so much junk, and not the fun kind. And everything seems so old and dated. If I ever do take my holidays, I'm just going to spend it throwing everything out :)

I know, I'm getting ahead of myself with the summer talk, but I was so happy to see the sun :) Do you get much sunlight in your room?

I hope you enjoyed the toast and Summer Pudding jam :) What kinds of fruit go in your Summer Pudding?

Dex said...

Do you like Caramel Wafers and Rocky biscuits? I've been given a whole load of them at work. Apparently they were brought in for a meeting and no one ate them. I think I do a poor impression of an adult in their mid 30s :S

Louise Boyd said...

Caramel Wafer < top 5 biscuit
Rocky < weirdly coconutty and I'm here for it
...
We must have the same helpless, underfed puppy vibe going on because people are always trying to feed me, too.
Maybe we look really weak or something =/

Hayfever is killing me.
Why must the tree pollen attack me like this every year?
I like trees. Love 'em, actually!
Why must they make my face explode every hour on the hour? x_x

Dex said...

I thought I was going crazy when I tasted the coconut. Thank you for confirmation, Lilliputty :) It's been so long since I've had a Rocky that I'd completely forgotten! That's how exciting my days are at the moment :)

I think I have a reputation for not looking after myself. My mother still makes me packed lunches to take to work for goodness sake! No wonder everyone looks at me like some pitiable creature :)

I like trees too :) I wish Shetland had more of them. Are there lots of trees in Blair? Can you take anything for your hayfever?

Dex said...

I think everywhere is having a sunny day except us!

Louise Boyd said...

It was me. I stole your sunshine.
...
I'm not sorry.
:D

Dex said...

I knew it (shakes fist)! :D

But I have another weekend on my own. I could get used to this :)

Louise Boyd said...

I can't be too smug, we're dropping back down to 5 degrees and there's talk of snow in a couple of days -_-
That's what I get for stealing my besties sunshine.
What a dick! >_<

Sooooo I'm guessing you don't do anything for Mother's Day?
We used to but it was getting stupid and expensive, so instead mum's getting carrot cake and dinner of her choosing :)

Will we be stocking up on doughnuts for the weekend?
I think you should mix it up and get ice cream, too.
Gotta keep your reputation high, Captain Candyclaws :)

Dex said...

No doughnuts - for some reason I couldn't find the motivation to make my way to the supermarket :S But I did make pancakes :) What kind of ice cream would you recommend for next time?

We've had some sun today so you didn't take it all :) I've heard we're getting snow too!

My family are so predictable - of course we do nothing :) That sounds nice for your mum. I'd always be happy to be given cake and dinner :) Do you like carrot cake?

Dex said...

I hope your mum enjoyed the carrot cake :)

Louise Boyd said...

She did. As did we all. Today as well. It's a traybake so it's only one layer of cake, right?
Therefore it's totally fine that I doubled up my slices. Right? 0_0

You must buy strawberry cheesecake Häagen-Dazs. Or pralines and cream.
Any flavour, really!
Play, you'll get the added bonus of making me furiously jealous :)

Have you ever had a Yum Yum?

https://thehappyfoodie.co.uk/recipes/james-mortons-yum-yums/

In my humble opinion, they are the superior doughnut.
If you held in one hand the finest doughnut in all the land and a Yum Yum in the other, I'm eating the motherfudgin' Yum Yum.
Not even pausing the contemplate ^-^

Dex said...

Yes, completely acceptable. I always double up on slices when offered tray bake :)

Yum Yums are amazing! Totally agree that they are better than doughnuts :D This is so frustrating though, I've had Yum Yums in Shetland and I'm drawing a complete blank on where I got them from... I think I may have even mentioned it to you a long time ago... It's not even like I buy food from that many places :S Someone at work might know. Pretty sure it was something I had at work - we used to order lunches from various places and it might have been from one of them. Definitely wasn't from the supermarket. Why can't I remember the important things?! :)

Making you jealous is all the motivation I need to buy ice cream :) Also, it did end up snowing here today.

Dex said...

I meant to ask, where do you get your Yum Yums?

Louise Boyd said...

Like most food that enters the Boyd household, I have no idea where it comes from.
I am simply here to eat, my friend.
Like a spoiled King in ugly slippers ^-^

Dex said...

Eating, sleeping and reading. Are those your three favourite things? :)

It's still snowing here :S

Louise Boyd said...

Sunshine and really good tv. Gotta throw those into the list of likes.

We got an itty bit of snow yesterday and today we're just cold as fuck but sunny as hell.
...
MY WORST NIGHTMARE >_<
Sun I can't enjoy is asshole weather.
Asssssssshooooole!
Enjoy your snow, eat some for me. From the sky, not the ground. Ground snow-eaters are... gutter people :D

Dex said...

Those are all some of the best things :)

We had asshole weather here today as well :) And it was weirdly calm. I know that's a good thing but Shetland without any kind of breeze gives me the creeps :)

I bet I was a gutter person as a kid :D

I was so relieved today, Maggot. People at work had planned to go for drinks but it got cancelled so I was able to come straight home :)

Louise Boyd said...

Oh, you were definitely a gutter kid.
I bet you've eaten at least one daisy in your life.
Contemplated licking a frog?
If it helps, I was totally a gutter kid.
I'm 99.9% convinced the penny I ate when I was 5 or so is still in my stomach 0_0

Yayyyy for not having to socialise!
I never got drinks.
It always felt weird drinking in public. Like... just these odd little groups of people being slightly intoxicated together but separately?
Weird. Very weird. Especially when you stop drinking. Being the sober in a group of drinkers is exasperating >_<
I hope you celebrated solitude with something awesome. Be it sugar or a show/movie, or both!

Dex said...

You ate a penny?! :D My friends and I used to be obsessed with making magic potions when were were kids. Daisies were occasionally an ingredient :) No frogs though, I promise! We do get frogs in Shetland but I hardly ever seen them. There's something about frogs that I find hilarious so I'm always excited when I find one. I definitely need to grow up :)

It may shock you, but drinking, groups and being out in public have always been outside my comfort zone :) Even when I was more okay with those things. I never have anything to say, especially in group situations, and people tend to break away into their own private conversations. Also, there's something about the noise in public places that makes me want to disappear. Maybe I'm just not designed to have a social life :)

Your waffles are so pretty :)

Louise Boyd said...

Please never grow up. Frogs are hilarious.
We currently have a pond stocked with their spawn and I'm really hoping we see babies this year.
The stupid weather always manages to kill them because we get a warm surge, the frogs bang, and then it gets cold again :(
I want froglings, dammit!
I deserve froglings!

I did indeed eat a penny. I used to really like them. Their smell, their odd constant coldness, their colour.
Apparently as a 5 year old that equates to ingesting one and seeing if I can fuse myself with it and become sort of penny god =/
I think I'd've been better off drinking one of your potions.

Dex said...

Wait, you have a garden pond?! I'm sure you must have told me this but I've obviously forgotten :) Anything else I should aware of? Fountains, statues, mazes... please tell me you have a maze! Your garden just keeps getting more magical in my head :)

At least you only ate one coin :) One of the stupidest things I ever did was put an ant on my tongue while on holiday to see what would happen. It bit me :S

Louise Boyd said...

And you didn't gain superpowers?
Always disappointing.
...
WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?! 0_0
Kids are so weird.

We have five ponds. One large one connected to two mediums, and then two separate little ones.
I swam in the big one when it was being constructed. I would not do that now.
So much mulch. And frogs fucking. And just general swamp gunk =/
We use to have fish in them, too but the birds kept eating them x_x
Oh, and no mazes but the garden is kinda separated into "rooms".
Some parts are really woodlandy, others are more structured, and then there's the really wild parts.
It's a good garden. A really good one. The mater did an excellent job :)

Dex said...

I was disappointed. It definitely felt like that ant was radioactive :)

Your garden really does sound amazing. It must seem like a full-time job for your mum to maintain it. My family doesn't garden. My dad used to do the standard, boring things like grass cutting, weeding etc. but isn't really up to it anymore. Fortunately, one of our neighbours is a professional grass cutter so she tidies up our garden from time to time :)

And the neighbours have to take care of the play park as well. I'm glad we still have a park that kids can play in. It seemed like there were hardly any families in the area for a long time but that has changed now.

Does your family do barbecues in the garden?

Louise Boyd said...

If you had ant powers, what would you do with them?
Villain? Hero? Morally grey?
Or would you be so distracted by giant lumps of sugar that you'd never get anything done?

We don't barbecue. Never have. Mum's real particular about meat being cooked properly and she just doesn't trust it. Plus, she can't stand the smell.
SO many people barbecue around us and it annoys her to no end.
Have to say, I'd rather smell the garden than cooking meat =/
But if you offered me real American barbecue? I'd bite your hand off 0_0
Extra protein :)

I thought you had a really good tree in your garden?
Did I imagine that?

Dex said...

Ant powers? Is that being able to lift things twice your weight? I'd probably just keep that to myself in case people asked me to help them move house :) I think I'd prefer invisibility or being able to fly :) Some ants can fly, right?

We are not barbecue people either. The neighbours used to get together and have an annual one in the play park which was okay - 'Westerloch Fun Day' it was called :) Barbecues and games. I swear we used to have warm summers :)
Occasionally the kids would engage in a street wide water fight and one of the parents would soak everyone with a power hose. We were a strange community :)

The trees have all been cut back so our garden looks so bare. Apparently it was necessary but it still sucks :S So I'm extra jealous of your garden now :)

Louise Boyd said...

Your neighbourhood sounds like something out of Pleasantville 0_0
I don't think I've ever attended a street event. I don't think we've ever had one!
My sisters and I would just play with the other gutter punks and run through the sprinkler on hot days.
We didn't even chase after the ice cream truck =/
We're so socially barren -_-

Ps. Flying ants do exist. It's not okay. Nature is totally fucked sometimes x_x
But at least the squid armies haven't learned how to breathe above water yet. When that happens, I'm moving to Mars.

Dex said...

Chasing ice cream truck was so stressful! :) I'm sure it was just as nice growing up in Blair :) Did you not go for long summer walks? Or play by the river? Is there a river near you?

To be honest, I don't look back on my childhood with much nostalgia. It was pretty uneventful. And I was just as awkward and annoying, although probably less aware of it :) But I swear the summers were warmer and the winters snowier!

The sea is a scary place. I always remember the colour of the sea when on holiday somewhere tropical. At the resorts, the water nearest the beach would be ridiculously clear and blue. But it would be surrounded by this dark, murky world. It felt like you would disappear and never be seen again if you accidentally went out too far :S

Louise Boyd said...

What's your ice cream of choice from the ice cream truck?
When you actually caught, that is :)

At the resorts, the water nearest the beach would be ridiculously clear and blue. But it would be surrounded by this dark, murky world. It felt like you would disappear and never be seen again if you accidentally went out too far :S

THIS IS WHY THE SEA/OCEAN IS FUCKING TERRIFYING AND NO ONE UNDERSTANDS >_<
It's endless and bottomless and if you get stuck in the middle of it, something's gonna fuck you up. Sea monsters. Dehydration. Drowning. The three big S's: Sharks, squids, and sirens.
If only it was full of leafy sea dragons, it'd be much friendlier :(

There's a river that runs through town called The Ericht, and there's a section of it with these massive flat-topped boulders that if you were brave enough/stupid enough, you'd sorta hop across smaller boulders to get to and sorta y'know, bask in your achievement.
I never did it.
Short legs, bad balance, and a healthy awareness of mortality is kind of a no-hop situation ^-^

Dex said...

Hmm, probably a 99 if I had enough change. It always seemed right to get a proper ice cream in a cone :) Or a Mr Freeze if I was a bit short :) Do you remember Calypsos? At the end, you would be left with a little pocket of icy orange juice :)

Even in the clear, shallow water, I was always frightened of standing on something spiky or bitey in the sand :) Fortunately, the sea in Shetland is way too cold to be tempted to venture into. Only the crazies do!

I wish we had a river. We just have small ditches, maybe a couple of burns :) I also took very few risks as a child. Going across the narrow ledge to get to the top of Clickimin Broch was about as brave as I got :)

Louise Boyd said...

99er is always first choice.
Always.
With a flake.
Fuck anyone who tries to give me a 99er without a fucking flake.
Fucking animals 0_0

Have you heard about wild swimming?
Crazy people who go swimming in lakes, ponds and rivers at freezing temperatures. For fun.
...
These people make no sense to me =/

Dex said...

Is it really stupid that I thought a 99er always had a flake?! I thought that was part of what made it a 99er. I'm so dumb :D Also, why do flakes only ever taste really good when they've been stuck in ice cream?

I'm going to watch some videos of wild swimming and think about why anyone would ever do this to themselves :)

Louise Boyd said...

Technically I think the flake is optional but that feels like a choice I should make myself, not the ice cream man 0_0
For the past couple of years an ice cream van's been roaming my neighbourhood and the songs he plays are so accidentally creepy.
I blame all the horror movies I've watched =/

Dex said...

Lilliputty, they are creepy! They play music to lure children! Like some kind of pied piper, only with more sugar :) I bet your ice cream van has a creepy name too. I think our one is called Mr Whippy :)

Do you ever have ice cream sandwiches? Or make your own?!

Louise Boyd said...

I heard it today.
Faintly.
It sounds like Pennywise is coming to take my soul.
Or the child-catcher from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang has come to put me in his dungeon 0_0
If ever had an ice cream van, I'd play Stevie Wonder and Studio Ghibli music and nothing else ^-^

Ps. No idea what the van's called. I've never seen it, only heard it! o_O

Pps. Ice cream sandwiches are the bestttttt but I can't bite them -_- I have eat them with a fork, in a bowl, and it ruins the whole experience. Stupid sensitive teeth! Curse my gums! >_<
I want choco-taco and I want it without pain!

Dex said...

Ice cream sandwich, ice cream cake, some things sound so much better when you put ice cream in front of them :)

I suppose hearing the ice cream van should be a sign that it is nearly summer. Except it snowed here last night. Maybe that's why I haven't heard it yet. Our summer must start later :)

It is nice waking up in daylight though. Does your sleeping pattern change in summer?

Louise Boyd said...

I think I wake up a bit earlier and resent the tweeting birds in the small hours more but nah, vampires don't change their sleeping patterns for the sun!

You had snow?
Y'know, when they should really call it global cooling because this fucking country's weather is getting dumber.
It is only April, though, so maybe we're just expecting warmth too soon?

Dex said...

My sleeping pattern never changes either, even though I'm less of a vampire :)

I'm vaguely aware that we can get snow in Shetland as late as May so all my talk of being on the cusp of summer has been knowingly misguided :)

I would love just one week of clear, blue skies and only the gentlest of warm breezes. Preferably spent on my own, in the countryside, with a few books and a nice view. Maybe something cool to drink. I think that would do me a world of good! Didn't doctors used to prescribe things like that? :)

Louise Boyd said...

Nature is scientifically proven to help with depression and mood.
Not cure it but soothe it.
I can SO attest this. The minute it starts getting sunny again, I feel a thousand times better.
Maybe you need to camp out at Sandness during the Summer for a week with snacks and books and tv and just... do as the victorians did!
When they weren't choking on smog, that is =/

Dex said...

If only either of us could cook, I reckon we could spend a fairly idyllic summer in Sandness together :) You might get bored though. There's nothing much besides scenery, sunsets and walks to the beach. Still, I think it would be a nice place to read :)

Maybe someone could prepare some meals and cakes to take with us. Add in some snacks, a trusty waffle maker and perhaps a take away for the first night, I reckon we might last a week :)

Louise Boyd said...

Ugh, that all sounds so nice >_<
I haven't had a holiday in so long.
Do me favour, next time you're there, take some photos so I can properly visualise this little idyll you've painted for us.
And you totally underestimate my ability to lounge around and do nothing,
Put a book in my hand and the twitchy demon in me is soothed instantly ^-^

Very important question, though: what snacks and what takeaway? We might differ horribly!
Although, I do like to keep my food to myself, so shared separate eating would probably be the way to go =/

Dex said...

Well, I always subscribe to the theory that it's better for 2 people not to like the same foodstuffs. Then you don't have to worry about sharing or feeling jealous. Such a nice human :) But I don't think I would ever have a problem with sharing my food with you :)

It's very difficult to think of specific snacks, I like so many! Kinder Buenos of course :) Chilli tortilla chips. I know Doritos are the most obvious pick but I used to get some from M&S when I was south and I'm so sad they are now out of reach. When I used to travel on my own on the boat from Aberdeen to Lerwick, I would buy a couple of bags of the tortilla chips and hide in my cabin to eat them and watch dvds on my laptop :S Also, for some reason, I'm sort of craving a custard tart. They used to sell them in Tesco but I haven't seen them in ages.

There really isn't that much choice of takeaways in Shetland. Usually just Indian or Chinese, and I'm happy with either :) We get Chinese more because there's a pretty decent takeaway 5 minutes walk from home. I suppose fish and chips is another option but I never get very excited about that for some reason, except for the onion rings :) I suppose you have more choices in takeaways where you are?

I never get people who want to buy lots of takeaway dishes and then share them out between everyone. I mean, I get it, but I hate whenever anyone suggests it. I just want to be left with the dish or dishes I chose for myself :)

Louise Boyd said...

I'm just a monster with food. It's terrible.
I'm the person who'll dig for the nuggets of goodness in the ice cream tub, or steal all the folded over crisps from the packet.
Em made a chocolate banana bread a few years ago and the middle of it kinda turned into Nutella. I made a tunnel and ate my way through =/
I'm not to be trusted! >_<

We have terrible takeaway choices, it's a chippy or really bad curry/chinese.
Like, reaaaaally bad. The kinda stuff you'd only eat if you were absolutely hammered and lost all common sense.
Blair sucks balls -_-
At least we know how to make pizza =/

Dex said...

I like that you're that kind of monster :) I'm just imagining Emily cutting into the chocolate banana bread the next day and finding it all hollowed out :D

I'm very jealous that you can make pizza :) I remember you telling me about the ham, mascarpone and capers. Are there any other topping combinations you have come up with?

Louise Boyd said...

I got scolded quite badly and forced to eat the middle-less part of the bread I'd tunnelled my way through.
It was a very unenjoyable punishment :D

I've been campaigning for Hawaiian but Em won't let me :(
No one shares my love of a weird fruit dough discs -_-

Dex said...

I'm glad they still feed you :D

I don't mind Hawaiian pizza. Haven't had it in ages though. Did I tell you I have a long weekend for Easter Monday? How are the chocolate supplies?

Louise Boyd said...

I have no chocolate.
I am barren of chocolate.
Not even a bag of mini eggs.
Not being five and showered in all the chocolate is so fucking depressing -_-
Why must being grown up mean I can't make myself sick with sugar?
How made these absurd rules?!

Are you parentless for this long weekend or are you gonna be holed up in the Dex Cave?

Dex said...

No peace for me, I'm afraid. I think it's very unfair of my parents to stay in Lerwick during the long weekend :)

I'm actually at work at the moment. Had a panic attack last night about something I forgot to do. My brain doesn't like letting me relax :) But at least I was able to sort it quickly. Now I'm just enjoying the empty office until I can be bothered to walk home :)

Surely you'll get something sugary for the holiday?!

Louise Boyd said...

Your poor brain :(
Did you get it sorted?
If it helps, I'd've probably gone in as well. Can't settle until things are just right >_<

When the office's empty, do you ever look at people's workspaces?
Not snooping. Just looking at how it differs to your own?
I used to do that in the studio in uni when I was way earlier than everyone else.
It was liking looking at fingerprints :)

I won't go without sugar. Sarah's currently baking a blueberry bundt cake. Says it'll taste like a giant blueberry muffin. I'm very excited :D

Dex said...

I would love a blueberry muffin right now, especially a giant one :)

I'm guessing our office workspaces are way less interesting than those at an art university :D But I might sometimes sneak a glance to make myself feel better about the state of my own desk :) At the moment though, everything is less personalised since so many people are still working from home and actually we've been told to remove most personal items from our desks so other people can sit at them :S I don't think anyone has told Kerry though - I think a person could live at her desk for several weeks with the amount of items she has lying around :) I suppose it doesn't really matter for the two of us since we're in the office almost every day (and I would fear for the life of the fool who would dare sit in her workspace).

What was your workspace at uni like?

Louise Boyd said...

Kerry gets more interesting the more info you give me.
Is she a packrat? A desk full of bizarre items that only she understands?
Would she stab a bitch for taking her stapler? o_O

This was my last workspace in uni:

https://1drv.ms/i/s!AtKo8vkvZl6DhRtYh3fdvcdwV412

Not super interesting but I'd mentally checked out by that point *-*
The pink is clear evidence I'd totally lost it =/

Ps. FERRERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRO ROCHERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!
You are BEST human that ever did live >_<

Dex said...

It makes no sense but Kerry is both the most organised and chaotic person I know, the sort of person who is ready for every occasion but can misplace something in her handbag for two weeks. But yes, I would get stabbed if I borrowed her stapler :) We also do a lot of trivia because she likes proving how much smarter she is than me, and also has a whiteboard where she likes to draw the most random things - I think you'd like her :)

No wonder you liked looking at people's workspaces if they were as interesting as yours! Is that a hardhat?!

I know Ferrero Rocher is hardly seasonal but I couldn't decide on an Easter Egg :)

Louise Boyd said...

I'm gonna need an example of a random drawn thing.
Very intrigued *-*

Ēostre might strike me down for this but... Ferrero Rocher are better than Easter eggs ^-^
And technically! They are an egg. If you think about it. Just round instead of tapered. Totally acceptable holiday of chocolate giftage! :D

Ps. That is indeed a hardhat. I can't remember why I had it =/
I might still have it.
You pick up the weirdest shit in art schools. And never leave food unattended at your desk. The gannets will descend when you're not looking o_O
I lost a whole packet of Opal Fruits that way.
Bloody monsters.

Dex said...

Quite often it is just a drawing of a cat, occasionally an illustration some terrible fate befalling my poor self :)

I would totally have wondered over to your space for an Opal Fruit :)

I don't think gannets are restricted to art schools - leave food anywhere out in the open in our office and it will have disappeared by the end of the day :) But I've been very good lately at bringing in chocolate to share - Breakaways, Penguins, Gold Bars, Clubs... mainly because I felt bad about eating all the food that was already there :)

I totally forgot to mention something incredibly exciting that happened at the weekend. My mum brought home some proper homemade millionaire's shortbread from this place called Scoop (basically a fancy food shop in our tiny mall). They were amazing! :D

Louise Boyd said...

For some reason, Kerry's subject matter doesn't surprise me in the slightest.
In what ways has she murdered you, dearest?
Pushed off a cliff?
Trampled by a herd of kittens?

Millionaire Shortbread really is a gift from the gods.
But only if they get the biscuit to caramel to chocolate ratio right.
Personally? I want an obscene amount of caramel to kinda squish out the sides of the slice when I bite down.
The messier the better!
I had this totally obvious realisation a while back that a Twix is just millionaire's shortbread but rubbish.
...
WHY DID IT TAKE ME SO LONG TO FIGURE THAT OUT?! 0_0

Ps. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who benefits from your generosity with sugar :D

Dex said...

Mauled by a walrus is a favourite one :)

I've never made that connection with Twix either! You're always blowing my mind with your observations :) You'll be glad to know that the millionaire's shortbread from the weekend was full of caramel :)

How was the giant blueberry muffin?

Louise Boyd said...

A walrus?
...
She's a genius *-*

The blueberry muffin was kinda disappointing, actually!
Even Sarah agreed. She's gonna made BIscoff Blondies to make sure she can still bake :D

There's so much sun here, I've been soaking it up like a cat ^-^
...
It totally just jinxed the weather, didn't I? >_<

Dex said...

I was going to mention the weather :) I was hoping it was just as nice in Blair, even nicer perhaps. The mists did descend for a few hours today (that always happens when we have good weather) but it has cleared again. Has Charlie been enjoying the sun too? Also, do you ever wear sunglasses?

I hope your sister isn't being too hard on herself. I suppose when you're experimenting with baking, you're bound to have the odd average effort. And it's probably only average by your family's standards - it would be way above what I'm used to! And if it has led to Biscoff Blondies being made... :)

Louise Boyd said...

I'd wear my sunglasses if I could find the bloody things.
They're under my bed, somewhere =/
I put them away during the grand room redesign, but their exact location? A mystery :)
Do you wear any?
And what style?
Mine are faux tortoiseshell Wayfarer dupes.
Very cool, very classic, and I still look like a dick in them ^-^

Dex said...

I doubt very much that you don't look good in them :) I do love that when I ask you about something, you always have a preference for a specific type of that something. It makes even the small things seem interesting :) I can't even remember the last time I wore a pair of sunglasses. Probably on holiday somewhere :S Sunglasses don't come in handy much in Shetland :)

It has clouded over here now and the wind has gotten up. Still the last few days were quite nice :)

Louise Boyd said...

I'm always panicking that if I wear sunglasses, I'll end up with tan lines.
Well, burn lines. This Scottish skin doesn't turn golden =/
I can't find a sunscreen that doesn't give me rash, though >_<

Dex said...

I've finally managed to catch covid. I started to feel a bit flemmy (yuck) on Thursday night, then got a slight cough on Friday. I took a test when I got home from work and it was showing as negative, but another one this morning came up positive. It's really only a sore throat, mild cough and headache, and a bit of a temperature. Still annoying though :)

Louise Boyd said...

Nooooooooooooooooooo!
You've joined the plague ranks >_<
I told you not to lick random strangers just because they have candy, Dexterous!
...
:)

I'm glad it's not too terrible, and this is gotta be a great excuse to stay in bed all day and drown yourself in tea and toast, right?
Binge watch some old favourites?
I think a little Schitt's Creek might be really good medicine for covid.

Dex said...

Come on, there's only like an 85% chance that was how I managed to catch covid :D

The sore throat is the worst part. Really fucked with my sleep last night, waking me up every half hour. Also, I'm one of those people whose functionality slips to almost 0% when even slightly ill!

Thanks Lilliputty, Schitt's Creek was an excellent suggestion for covid recovery :) Disaster though, there was no bread in the house to make toast!

Louise Boyd said...

I can't even fathom a house without bread.
Isn't that illegal?
Did you find something to sustain yourself?
I'd say eat some ice cream, the old cure for a sore throat, but they changed the rules and now it's toast! And you don't have any >_<
You deserve toast, dammit.

Ps. The fam sends you feel better vibes!

Dex said...

Your family are the best. I bet they would have even sent me over very moist cakes. I'm sure those are good for sore throats :)

The bread suddenly reappeared last night. My parents must have taken it to Sandness. At least being confined to quarters means I can have nice leisurely toast filled breakfast tomorrow morning before work :) Sad fact, I've learned that hot chocolate is terrible for sore throats!

Louise Boyd said...

Weird, 'cause that's the only thing I could drink when I had the cold of doom a couple years back.
Why was it terrible, Dexterous?
Did it increase the phlegm issue?
Make swallowing an actual bitch?
Maybe hot Ribena or something would be better? It's what Em drinks when she's sick. Personally, I think it tastes like hot garbage but y'know, taste buds...

Yay for the magical return of bread, though! :D
I had some in your honour at lunchtime ^-^

Dex said...

For some reason, the hot chocolate seemed to just really irritate my sore throat. Maybe it was too hot :) Still, my throat is better today so I'm sure I'll be back on the hot chocolates again before long :) I actually managed to get an uninterrupted sleep last night! I was genuinely surprised when I woke up in the morning :)

Definitely feeling better today. Sore throat is almost gone. It's still a little difficult to talk without coughing but I don't like talking much anyway :)

Not sure how I'd feel about hot Ribena just because I'm not the biggest fan of Ribena in general. I mean, I think it's fine but as a kid, I always went for the orange squash instead :) Still, maybe it has soothing qualities when you're ill that make up for the taste :)

Feel free to keep eating bread in my honour :) Was it toast you had? What do you like with non-toasted bread?

Louise Boyd said...

What are you? Superhuman?
Nobody bounces back that quickly!
...
Which in Lilly-speak means: yay, he's getting better!

:D

Dex said...

As soon as I'm recovered, I'm going to buy some more of that millionaire's shortbread to celebrate. That's all the motivation I need :)

Is the weather still nice in Blair?

Louise Boyd said...

Your priorities are impeccable :)
I always get hyper-fixated on food after I've been sick.
Act like I've been locked up and starved for months and proceed to turn into a wild animal when finally set free 0_0
I ate so much cereal the last time I got over a stomach bug.

The weather is still nice! But colder. But not Winter-cold... if you know what I mean?
Charles and I were puttering about in the sunshine this afternoon while everyone else was out.
I say puttering, but what I mean is: I looked for photo opportunities and he stalked me, received head scratches, and pounced on me a few times.
Little weirdo *-*

Are you keeping yourself entertained?
Sucks you still have to work :(

Dex said...

I'm trying to picture Charlie pouncing. He always seems too regal for that :D Is there a particular time of year when your garden looks at its best? Also, you had the house to yourself?!

I could have taken some days off :) I was almost going to, because I absolutely hate working from home. I know a lot of people love it but I'm always in zombie mode :) I've got most of July booked off though!

I've been trying to read a bit more lately so that's been filling in a bit of spare time. Also, I had tray bake delivered today :) Someone at work was leaving today so they brought in tray bake and because I was having to isolate, someone dropped a few squares along the house :)

Louise Boyd said...

You never tell me the flavour of the baked goods people supply you with!
I NEED DETAILS! >_<

Technically... Sar was sleeping but everyone else was out and it was eerie as fuck.
Peaceful but weird.
I always long for some time alone and then when it happens, I quietly freak out 0_0
Charles kept me distracted, though, and he really isn't too regal to pounce.
The little bastard likes to hide behind things and sneak attack. He can bounce to the height of your face x_x
Terrifying.

...

WHAT'VE YOU BEEN READING?! YOU HAVE TO TELL ME 0_0

Dex said...

One of them was crunchie, and the other was white chocolate with coconut. They gave me 3 pieces of each :)

I've been completely underestimating Charlie's physical prowess! Does he move fast too?!

I've just been reading ridiculously old fashioned things - Sherlock Holmes, the Alice books, some other detective things. I'm just about ready for the retirement home :)

Louise Boyd said...

I know you're sick and deserve the traybakes but goddammit, they sound immense 0_0

Nothing wrong with reading the classics!
Although, if you start reading Dickens or philosophising Russians for fun, I'm gonna start to worry =/

Ps. Charlie's really fast for one so chonky.
Although, my dad saw a fox in the street yesterday morning and I'm really hoping Charlie's smart enough to know not to pick a fight >_<
He's so dumb sometimes but he's my boy! Mr Fox can't have him!

Dex said...

Don't worry, my brain can't cope with anything too heavy :) Did I tell you that someone in the office is reading Sarah J. Maas? And I was like 'oh, my best friend loves her Court of Thorns series'. Exciting conversations we have in HR :)

Charlie doesn't fight with other animals does he?! I don't think I've ever seen a fox in real life. We don't have many wild mammals running around up here. Not even squirrels. I think I've only seen hedgehogs and otters. Do you get squirrels in Blair?

Louise Boyd said...

Ahhhhhhh! It's my dream to meet a fellow Maas fan and freak out together over how fucking good it is >_<
But it's also my nightmare because what if they disagree with me on stuff and I have to put them on my shit like for eternity 0_0
Is it the Throne of Glass series they're reading or Crescent City?

Also: "best friend" ^-^

I will trade you our hedgepigs for your otters!
...
I take that back! Don't tell the prickly pigs I said that! I love their tiny pink feets >_<

Ps. Charlie fights everything because he's an idiot x_x

Louise Boyd said...

*shit list

-_-

Dex said...

She actually had a copy of a Throne of Glass book with her (she's one of those people who carry the books they are reading around with them so they can read them during a break) and she'd already read the A Court of Thorns and Roses series. Don't worry, Alanah is one of the nicest people you could meet so I don't think she'd end up on your shit list :)

I hope Charlie doesn't get hurt in these fights!

I get very excited whenever I see a hedgehog trundling along in the garden. I like most animals that have the good sense to hibernate during the winter even though I am every jealous of them :)

I mean, I could have referred to you as my Maggot or my sleep fighting partner as well, or the one person in the world who puts up with all my nonsense :)

Louise Boyd said...

"...she's one of those people who carry the books they are reading around with them so they can read them during a break"

Marry her 0_0
Plus, Alanah totally sounds like a name SJM would use for one of her characters.
Jealous >_<

Hibernation really confuses my brain.
I mean, I get it, biologically, but also I'm like, woah, how is that possible?
It's a whole confusing ouroboros brain spasm.

Ps. I like your nonsense :)

Dex said...

I really do think you would get on really well with a couple of people in our office :) And I bet you would carry around several books and your desk would end up looking like a small library :)

I'm now out of isolation and was back in the office today eating Breakaways. I'm sure glad that's over :) You know what sad fact I realised the other day - that I did not know it was spelt phlegm :S

Talking of hibernation, I slept so much on Sunday. I think it's because I had fresh bedsheets and wanted to make the most of them. I spent pretty much the late afternoon and evening drifting in and out of consciousness while watching Archer... I'm so glad you like my nonsense :)

Right, I'm off to read your monthly :)

Louise Boyd said...

Isn't non-lucidly watching cartoons an age old pastime when sick?
I know it's definitely mine.
Glad you're feeling better, Fungus.
Sucks you had to go back to work, though!
Although, I think you secretly kinda like work =/
But that might just be the free biscuits :)

Ps. I go nowhere without a book. If I can fit a mass market paperback in my coat pocket, I will stuff it in there!
Can you imagine what I would've been like in uni if I'd had an iPad and the kindle app at hand during lectures?
I could've been reading Fantasy instead of listening to very boring men talk about Futurism and Abstract Impressionism 0_0
I was robbed.

Dex said...

Well, I like some of the people, and occasionally being given food, but I would retire to Sandness in a heartbeat if I could :) I think the only thing I'd really miss is playing trivia and puzzles with Kerry. Actual work isn't much fun, I'd much rather be watching cartoons while half-asleep :)

When you used to go on holiday, did you have to take a suitcase full of books with you? :)

I love, love, love your new book stamp! :D

Louise Boyd said...

Puzzles?!
You didn't tell me about the puzzles!

I took everything with me when I went on holiday.
It'd be me, Sar, and Em in the backseat of the car and my ginormous rucksack stuffed with cds, books, soft toys, random junk I was obsessed with at the time squished between my feet.
Not comfortable. Not comfortable at. all.
But I needed my things 0_0

I love, love, love my book stamp, too ^-^

Dex said...

Kerry is very big on her puzzles, even has a subscription to a monthly puzzle book :) Do you ever do puzzles?

For some reason, I used to take film guides with me on holiday. Such a weirdo :) Can you read while in motion? I can't do it at all. If I was in a car, I wouldn't even be able to get through the plot synopsis on the back of a book without throwing up :S For me, reading while travelling is some kind of superpower that I don't have :)

Do you think you'll go through and stamp all of your books? :)

Louise Boyd said...

I like puzzles, but they're not fond of me.
Nothing makes me feel dumber than puzzles >_<
My brain is not logical. Too off with the fae and dragons and other mystical beasts :)

You get motion sickness?
That succccckkkkkkkssssss!
I'm fortunately not afflicted with that particular malady, which is why I spend most car rides reading.
Em and my mum suffer, though. The most the mater can manage is reading a map, and even then it's touch and go =/

Ps. I will stamp EVERYTHING 0_0

Dex said...

You don't get motion sickness?! So, you're a superhuman! All this time you've secretly been an excellent traveller :) I'm a terrible at it - the sort of person who needs to sit in the front seat of the car. On boats, unless it is flat calm, I have to lie down for the entire journey. For some reason, the only type of travelling I've ever enjoyed is by train, so long as it isn't crowded. I sometimes think I would like to go on one of those sleeper trains across Europe, like something out of an Agatha Christie novel :)

I'm no good at puzzles either. I just can't do lateral thinking. I bet you're amazing at trivia though :) Does your family watch a lot of quiz shows and shout the answers at the tv? :)

Louise Boyd said...

I'd totally go on the Orient Express with you.
Separate cabins, though.
Just in case you barf 0_0
Because we'd totally be having high tea in their fancy dining area.

We like watching Only Connect and failing to be non-linear enough to get anything right and then being bloody amazed when we do! ^-^
We gave up on University Challenge a while ago but I'd totally go back if Paxman would bugger off and they'd only have one Cambridge and Oxford team instead of the ten dozen they allow <_<
SO fucking unfair.
I hate Oxbridge x_x

Dex said...

I bet we'd be good at solving murder mysteries while travelling :)

I only ever used to watch University Challenge when on holiday at my granny's in West Kirby. My granny and uncle used to have their regular programmes they would watch every evening. But I was terrible at it. Any specialist knowledge I might have is in incredibly dumb things :) My uncle and dad seemed to always do well though. In fact, in our household, my dad is the only one who has any real knowledge of history, geography, art, wildlife etc. The rest of us are all fairly useless :)

Does your family spend much time watching tv together? We've never really been a tv family. Although our house is still full of video tapes that my dad used to record off the tv. Mostly things like wildlife documentaries, sitcoms, classical music concerts etc. We even still have a VCR!

Louise Boyd said...

I think we might still have a VCR up in the loft, and a few video tapes lying around but still up and running?
Are you mad?!
I so don't miss having to rewind things 0_0
I do have a scar on my forehead from a tape, though! Sarah accidentally whacked me with it when we were kids *-*

We used to watch tv together a lot but as we've gotten older and more frustrated with each other, we kinda do our own thing unless mum decides she wants watch a movie with us.
I think it's really a ploy to force us all to spend at least a little time together, besides dinner =/
It's nice but I prefer being in my room like a goblin. That way I get to watch what I want without the running commentary ^-^
...
I'm so antisocial, it's ridiculous.

Dex said...

Do you have any other scars? To be honest, most if the things we have recorded on tape, we now have on dvd. I'm not sure why we hang onto them :S

If it makes you feel any better, I spend almost all of my time at home in my bedroom. My sibling does the same and doesn't even eat dinner with us. When my parents are in Sandness though, I take over the living room as it gets the most light and has the comfiest places to sit :)

I keep thinking I should renovate my bedroom so it is a better place to spend all my time in. Apart from needing a serious tidy up, I don't have a tv or a comfy chair. And I'm not a big fan of my bed as it's very old. Actually, all the fixtures and fittings in my room could do with being replaced. I do have a proper desk to sit at but that's about it.

Louise Boyd said...

All my scars are on my face =/
One chicken pox scar, a dent from the video tape, a bigger dent from the roughcast wall I smacked into at primary school - got butterfly stitches for that one, lots of blood, and a small scar on my nose from what started as a nose scratch and turned deadly when a sister got involved =/
Adolescence had a vendetta against my face 0_0

You should totally renovate your bedroom!
Doing mine made me feel so much better being in it. Less just a room with my junk and more an actual bedroom with my things placed nicely in it.
I vote you paint it sky blue. For cheeriness ^-^
...
Says the surliest girl in all the world <_<

Ps. I LOVE taking over rooms when everyone's out. If I can build a duvet/pillow nest, I will. Like a cozy bird *-*

Louise Boyd said...

If forgot to ask about any scars you have!
Tell me, tell me, tell me!
I love scars!
...
!

Dex said...

There's a particular chair in the living room that I like to sit in when there's no one home. It has a foot rest, a small table next to it where I can put my drink, is facing the tv, and is just in the right place so I can see out the window but I'm hidden from view :)

I'm quite certain that 99% of children have smacked into a wall at primary school. It's almost a rite of passage :)

'started as a nose scratch and turned deadly when a sister got involved' - did she try to perform some kind of amateur surgical procedure?!

I have a very boring scar history. The only one I have is from my tb injection on my left arm. It's not a scar but I do also have an obscure birthmark on my upper left thigh. It's really just a small, jagged patch of white so not interesting at all to look at :)

I do love sky blue :) I think the first thing to do will be to throw out all the junk! I never thought of myself as a particularly messy person but things do just accumulate over the years :S I am very jealous of your bedroom :) How long ago did you renovate it?

Louise Boyd said...

You're like a cat.
With your particular spot.
In the sunshine.
People watching.
...
Adorable ^-^
Just don't start killing and eating wildlife =/
It's acceptable when cats do it, people... not so much. I mean, I'll forgive you, but the masses might hunt you down with garden trowels.
Like the Were-rabbit!

https://64.media.tumblr.com/c5dbb1f55a7ee629d77db8355179c04a/906c258c1839269e-81/s540x810/8c46f16ede037b6d06a3badadb0a280d62e70860.gifv

Before I knew better, I used to think birthmarks were where the forceps clamped down on the way out >_<
I think a family member covinced me of that when I was just a kiddo.
Adults are so mean and I was easily fooled 0_0
Sisters are also very violent. The nose scritch turned lethal because Sarah accidentally waved her hand around beside me while I was itching and collided with me. My thumb nail scraped a half centimetre of skin off me >_<
You barely see the scar unless you're looking now but at one point it was bloody ridiculous!

What kinda junk you got?
Mine's mostly school shit I can't throw away for some reason and old clothes I'm sentimental about.
So many Emily Strange t-shirts from my emo years :D

Dex said...

The nose scritch sounds so painful! I'm glad it didn't end up leaving a big scar. Besides, a scar is much more interesting than a birthmark :)

Would you help protect me from the trowel wielding masses? At least with the Were-rabbit, it was only carrots he was after :)

Did I tell you I'm going to a wedding in two weeks. The evening part, thankfully I don't have to sit through a ceremony :) But I had to order a suit :S If it doesn't arrive on time, or it doesn't fit, it may be time to dust off the old Beanfeast suit :)

My room is full of papers, all stuffed in drawers or crammed in a corner. And some of those old vhs tapes I was mentioning. They are not even mine! And some old clothes. Again, not mine! Some old National Geographics. Those are mine - an uncle gave me a subscription for a birthday present. A bunch of random things on top of my wardrobe (from here it looks like shoeboxes, board games, film guides, a curtain rail, a globe, a bird house, a fishing rod, a samurai sword...) Probably the most ridiculous thing I have in my room is two gigantic loudspeakers. I'm guessing they are from before I was born as they are absolutely massive. You wouldn't even know they were loudspeakers, I basically use them as units to keep stuff on.

Hopefully reading all that makes you feel slightly better about holding onto your Emily Strange t-shirts :D

Louise Boyd said...

I will always be proud of my Emily Strange t shirts ^-^
And yeah, you gotta get rid of the stuff, Fungus. Clutter's a real buzzkill when it isn't even your own!

You do realise the most important part of the wedding is the cake, right?
You must leave with cake.
And hope like fuck it isn't traditional fruit cake.
I mean, no offence to the good old FC but as a wedding cake?
Barbaric 0_0
Will Kerry be at the wedding so you have company?
...
Said that like you're a five year old who has stringed mittens through his jacket >_<

Dex said...

It better not be fruit cake! :) It's someone from work who is getting married so hopefully I won't feel too out of place. Although I probably will still feel like a five year old with stringed mittens. That's just a given in social situations :) But Kerry's coming too so we can just sit in the corner and play trivia games :)

I really do need to clear out the clutter! Fortunately, there's still quite a lot of space in my bedroom despite everything. My room actually is a pretty ridiculous size. It used to be the playroom when my mum was a childminder, full of toys and games. And my bedroom used to be in the middle of the house. But then they got swapped around, probably because it was more convenient not having the playroom at the farthest end of the house. And when my mum stopped childminding, the playroom became the dining room (although we only ever used it for guests). These days, it's more of an office for my mum. I bet this all sounds so fascinating :)

Louise Boyd said...

Okay, now I'm kinda jealous of the size of your room.
Could you make a book nook?
With shelves and a big seat and side table and good lighting?
...
Not me inflicting my room needs on you or anything 0_0

I can't even imagine what goes on at a wedding, other than what I've seen on tv.
I don't even have nice shoes to attend a wedding! Are you allowed to go in your best trainers? =/

Dex said...

I would love a book nook! I think my room is big enough but would need some serious re-arranging. And I would totally let you design my room so long as you promised to come visit occasionally :) Would the book nook have a theme?

I wish I could go on trainers but I thought it safest to order a pair of derby shoes. I don't even know what derby shoes are but they were a suggested accessory when I ordered the suit :) Fortunately, I don't have to sit through a ceremony - it's just the evening bit I'm going to. I'm assuming I can hide in a corner and then go home at the earliest time that it's not considered rude to leave :)

Louise Boyd said...

When you said Derby shoes, I had to google them just in case they were those horrific pointy shoes all men seem to wear 0_0
Thank fuck they're not!
What colour are they? What colour's your suit?!
Will you wear a tie? Ugh ties.
I know they're smart but they just tools of strangulation, in my opinion =/

The book nook would be wizard's laboratory themed and of course I would visit, and promptly steal the seat and never leave ^-^

Dex said...

Wizard laboratory themed book nook... that is going in our dream house :)

I don't like pointy shoes at all. This will sound so stupid but I'm really self conscious about the size of my feet and I really hate wearing shoes that make them look too long :S I keep thinking I'll end up looking like Sideshow Bob :)

I only ordered the suit and shoes on Sunday and they turned up yesterday so that was good. I tried them on for the first time tonight and they actually fit! The suit is navy blue (and it also came with a waistcoat so I can look even more ridiculous) and the shoes are black. Hopefully it's boring enough that I won't be noticed and can sneak off about an hour into proceedings :)

If you had been here, I would totally have used that +1 on my invitation :)

Louise Boyd said...

And I would have kindly declined and waited patiently in the book nook for cake and tales of social anxiety trauma :)

Dex said...

I wouldn't hold it against you :)

I forgot to say, I hadn't decided on a tie. When I tried the suit on I thought I could maybe get away with not wearing one but I'm not sure if it's expected at weddings... also, I have no idea how to put one on :)

Louise Boyd said...

I was gonna mock you for not remembering how to tie a tie, but I think I'd probably have to shut my eyes and hope muscle memory kicked in 0_0

If you gonna wear one, you can't go wrong with a simple colour block. Black, dark blue, maybe something lighter if you're feeling whimsical!
But I don't think you have to. A suit can look awesome with just a shirt. Undo the top button, maybe a second, depending not the spacing of buttons and bam! Suity goodness.

I've rethought your hypothetical +1 offer. I'd come. I'd even wear a dress. But it'd be for science and cake and to keep you company, but if anyone tried to make me dance, I'm going under the table.
Adulthood be damned *-*

Are you gonna wear the waistcoat? Can I pretend you're wearing a pocket watch with it if you do?

Dex said...

You should mock me - it's not even a question of remembering, I've never learned how to tie a tie! :D I think I've only worn one a couple of times in my life - once to the Beanfeast, and another to my cousin's wedding, and both times I needed help putting it on!

Thank you for the recommendations too - your advice on these matters is always greatly appreciated :) I'll probably go with a darker colour as I doubt I'll be feeling whimsical :) I think I'll wear the waistcoat - it's a good thing I don't own a pocket watch or I would wear it just so I could tell you I did :D

I'd join you under the table when it came to dancing. The fact that you'd go through all that just to keep me company (and eat cake, of course) gives me a warm feeling inside :)

Louise Boyd said...

But.. wait... what about school?
Did you not have to wear a tie?! *-*

Dex said...

Wear a tie for school? No. We just wore what we wanted to school. Did you have to wear school uniforms?! That has never been a thing in Shetland. I seem to recall you could buy a school jumper if you wanted but no one ever did. Our school photos were a disturbing collection of tracksuit tops and oversized jumpers :)

Louise Boyd said...

WHAT?!
I kinda hate you right now 0_0
School uniform was mandatory for us from Primary One upwards.
Pleated skirt, tie, white shirt, and school sweatshirt.
Well, until my mum forced my primary school headmaster to excise the chauvinistic policy of girls having to wear skirts.
My badass mater got us trousers ^-^
But the rest of the uniform remained.
It was hell x_x
I can't believe you didn't have to wear one! Lucky bastard!

Dex said...

Your mum was such a badass :D

I suppose living on an island where no one has ever worn a school uniform, it just seems like such a weird idea making kids all wear the same thing, even though I know it happens all over the place. I wonder why we were so lucky? I don't remember anyone ever dressing particularly outrageously :) Still, looking at our school photos, maybe a uniform wouldn't have been such a bad idea. We were a pretty motley looking bunch. And at least I would have learned how to put on a tie :)

What kind of clothes do you think you would have worn to high school if you had the choice?

Louise Boyd said...

In Primary, it would've been tracksuits and 90s space girl t-shirts, and in high school, baggy jeans and those Emily Strange t-shirts with a long t-shirt underneath, and giant Vans.
...
Never been cool, will never be cool!
But cool looks like a lot of hard work, so... I'll take comfy ^-^

Dex said...

Comfort is paramount :) I do wish you could have gone to our high school instead so you could have worn your own clothes. Did you go through much of an emo phase in high school and uni?

Another popular attire in high school was football tops. Not something I would wear but my friends in early high school were very much into football. I used to get invited to their houses to watch it on tv and I struggled so hard to feign enthusiasm whenever anything exciting happened that they eventually stopped asking me. I was awkward even back then :)

Louise Boyd said...

I wish I could've gone to your high school!
No uniform? An awkward Dex-friend?
Most excellent.
And I could've protected you from the football fanatics.
Although, I had this weird stint as a pre-teen where I wore a Man U shirt for no fucking reason at all.
I think it was the awkward Tomboy in me trying to belong. Maybe? Who the hell knows, I didn't even like the sport.
Thankfully, it didn't last too long and the emo phase set in.
Lasted all through high school and disappeared during uni.
Uni was my most awkward clothes phase. I was surrounded by perfect art girls and it was goddamn intimidating.
They all wore knitted hats. Even in summer =/

Dex said...

I think I did have a couple of football tops - extremely out of date ones and for teams nobody would ever recognise :) I wish I had gone through an emo phase. I never belonged to any particular group of friends after the first couple of years of high school. I wasn't a loner, I just didn't have any close friends I always went around with, and I didn't really go out at all after school. Hmm, maybe I should have made more of an effort :)

What else do perfect art girls wear? In my head it's a collection of random vintage clothing that all comes together seamlessly :) But you clearly know so much about clothes and what suits you and what you like so I always imagine your style as being perfectly you :)

Talking of summer, it's so warm here. Maybe not as warm as most places, but for us it's quite nice, except for the midges :)

Louise Boyd said...

"...you clearly know so much about clothes and what suits you and what you like so I always imagine your style as being perfectly you :)"

I don't know how I tricked you into thinking this but well done me, because in reality, I'm a fucking mess with a strict uniform of jeans, sweatshirts and trainers 0_0
The most interesting part of my "look" is whatever colour trainers I'm wearing >_<
I think I'm one of those people who could wear all the right elements of a "cool girl" outfit and still look awkward as fuck :D
But you think I'm cool, so I'm taking that as a win!

We're supposed to get sunshine all day and a high of 18C tomorrow.
I'm gonna try and wake up early so I can bask in all that vitamin D ^-^
Or at least find Charlie in a warm spot and attempt to rub his belly without activating his Venus fly trap tendencies.
Are you gonna bask? Or will you be stuck in work?

Dex said...

I think I would like your 'awkward as fuck' look :)

It was raining very heavily at about 6.30am when I woke up, changed to that horrible warm/damp kind of weather when I walked to work, and is now almost a perfect day. I'm still at work but I'll go home soon :) Did you enjoy all day sunshine with Charlie? Were you able to rub his belly? :)

Louise Boyd said...

CLOUDS.
...
Sigh -_-

Dex said...

I'm sorry, Lilliputty. I'm sure you'll get a day of sun very soon :) The weather is still quite nice here but I'm one of these people who have to take a coat everywhere in case it turns cold or rains. I just roll it up and shove it in my co-op bag if it's too warm :)

I'm going to have a quiet evening to try and prepare myself for tomorrow night's wedding party :S The plan is for 4 or 5 of us to meet up in town for 6.30pm, go somewhere relatively respectable for a few drinks (I'll be on the soft drinks), then I'll drive us to Whiteness (which is somewhere between Lerwick and Sandness) at about 8pm. I said I would drive so I won't be trapped out there :)

Louise Boyd said...

Oh, I'm a nervous weather person, too.
That's so comforting to know ^-^

Haha, Dexterous Epistolean! The man always with an escape plan! :D
Spectacular.
Just keep trying to remember that there will be food. Specifically cake.
Being fed improves forced fun by 70%.

Dex said...

No one has actually said there will be food but that's a given, right? And it better not be raisin filled cake :) Also, I'm guessing it'll be a 'paper plate piled with food, awkwardly balancing on your knee while sitting on uncomfortable chair' type of deal. You can tell I'm really looking forward to this :)

At least with driving, I won't be drinking alcohol, which means I don't have to worry about being in a state tomorrow :) The bad side is that other people will witness my terrible driving skills. I hope I don't have to overtake a cyclist or slow car on a country road! At least the parking where we're going should be fine. I've done my research on our destination like a complete loser :)

Louise Boyd said...

I've totally confused myself, is it today or Sunday this wedding's happening?
Either way, godspeed! And if the cake is raisin-filled, get thee to a supermarket and buy thyself some doughnuts!
Your bestie bard demands it :)

Researching your destination is totally fucking normal!
I do it. And I especially like to be shown how to do things like ticket booths, where to stand, etc. beforehand so I'm as prepared as humanly possible.
Surprise outside things are too fucking stressful 0_0
I'm that person who'll walk to a bus station instead of a bus stop, just so I don't have to do the awkward get on, have everyone stare at you, stumble down the aisle because the driver's too fucking impatient, thing >_<
I hateeeeee it.
Why is life just a series of embarrassing moments? =/

Dex said...

Hearing how you think about things always makes me feel so much better. I'm so glad I have you to tell about my own series of embarrassing moments :)

It was Saturday night so it's all over and done with :) I was home in bed by about 12.30am so it wasn't too bad but I would much rather have spent the whole day at home, eating junk food and watching nonsense :)

I did end up buying a tie though. They have a separate clothes shop in Co-op so I ended up going there about 9.30am yesterday morning. The only plain colour they had was black which I didn't think was the best colour for the suit I was wearing, so I ended up picking this slightly patterned mix or dark/light blue. And then had to watch a youtube video to learn how to tie it, which I just about managed, so I did learn one essential life skill yesterday :)

All I to eat/drink yesterday night some sweet drink concoction (it was called Sweet Sunrise but I have no idea what was in it except it tasted like a mouthful of sugar) at the place we went for pre-wedding drinks, and a coke at the actual wedding. There was other food (although I saw no cake - wtf?!) but I have this fear of eating in public! :S But I spent the whole night just sitting with work people (thankfully Kerry was sitting next to me) and then drove a few of them home. 2 of them were pretty drunk, and they asked me to drop them off at a place in town where they could get even more drunk, then I dropped Kerry at her place, and finally arrived home :)

I did buy doughnuts this morning though :D

Louise Boyd said...

I'm so glad it ended in doughnuts; I've got the sympathy shudders =/
But wtf? What the actual fuck? Who doesn't have cake at a wedding?
A muffin, at least!
Were you at the wedding of dessert-hating sociopaths? 0_0

Eating in public suckssssss. It's like your set up to spill something on yourself -_-

Oh, and congrats on tying a tie. Doesn't make me furious it was your first :) Not all :):):):)

Dex said...

It seemed like an awful lot of effort to just sit at a table for 3 hours :) To be fair, I made enquiries today and apparently there was some cake buzzing around - it had raisins! I don't know why they bothered :) Also, the weirdest looking pizza slices I've ever seen. Honestly, the base was so thick it looked like someone had spread the topping on a bath sponge :) Still, I have to admit that Hannah (the bride) looked extremely lovely, and she is one of the few people I genuinely like, so I think it was worth going :)

Thanks, Lilliputty. I'm sorry you had to go through years of tie tying but I'm glad that these days no one tells you what you have to wear :)

Eating at home is a much more enjoyable experience. If it were a choice between a 3 course meal at a fancy restaurant, and eating strawberry pencils on my bed while watching a favourite tv show, I'd go for the strawberry pencils every time :)

Louise Boyd said...

But what if you could have fancy restaurant food... in your room?
A gourmet burger?
Thrice fried chips?
A fancy ass milkshake?!
...
I'm describing fancy McDonald's, but you get my gist!
I think that'd be pretty awesome *-*
You could even keep the strawberry pencils as a side dish :)

Ps. Weddings are a bizarre waste of money but I get it. Declaring your love and all that shit. But personally? I'd skip the wedding and spend the money on a fancy ass library :D
I'll need the dress, though, to twirl amongst my books ^-^

Louise Boyd said...

ALSO! That's cake abuse. You were abused. I think you should call the cake police.

Dex said...

To make up for lack of cake, I did get some homemade millionaire's shortbread at work (Susan, our resident baker, had her last day before maternity leave on Friday). She also left extras in the fridge which she said I could help myself to. I didn't need to be told twice :)

Fancy McDonald's would be my choice! You know me so well :) We used to have a steakhouse in Lerwick but I would always go for the burger with as many sides as possible. All the sides :D I haven't had a milkshake in so long. The only place I remember getting them was Clickimin Swimming Pool when it first opened. Do you ever make milkshakes at home? What flavour would you go for?

I don't know why anyone would ever put themselves through the stress of organising any large event! Although I get confused whenever someone willingly invites more than one person over to their house :) Could I occasionally come and hang out with you in your library? I would dress up if you wanted me to :)

Louise Boyd said...

Chocolate milkshake. Always chocolate. And of course you could hang out in my library, but you have to bring millionaire's shortbread and your outfit must be character-based.
'Tis the rules of the library ^-^

Dex said...

I like being special enough to be allowed into your secret library and I would definitely stop at the cake fridge on the way there :)

What character would you like to dress up as?

Louise Boyd said...

Currently?

Guillermo (WWDitS), specifically in this outfit:
https://64.media.tumblr.com/b66c30f78e66565c7413d57e76e1e68e/6216def29eefeb1f-f1/s540x810/579e24235f1821c04eea2031047dcb3b7a27d541.gifv

:)

Dex said...

I can totally picture you dressed like that while sitting in your library :D

My mum was saying that Freya might come up this summer. Otherwise I'll go down and visit. I miss that face :)

Louise Boyd said...

Yayyyy Freya!
Fairy queen, ruler of dinosaurs, all-round magnificent badass!
You gotta get that girl a crown, Dexterous.
One that looks like the horns atop a triceratops' head.
...
But sparkly :)

If I'm Guillermo, who will you dress as?

Dex said...

Could I just turn up wearing one of David Rose's jumpers? Would that get me into the library? :)

I feel I have to warn you, if Freya does visit, I will be sending you a million photos and telling her all about you :)

Louise Boyd said...

So you'll basically be making her aware that book goblins do in fact exist?
NICE :D

Which jumper, though?

Dex said...

Maybe the furry polka dot :D

I was going to say you're no goblin, but I think Freya is turning into a little book goblin as well, so apparently they are my favourite kind of creature :) What were your favourite childhood books?

Louise Boyd said...

Ohhhhh excellent choice. It's so cosy looking. Plus, that episode. I love when Patrick lovingly tortures him :)
My pick? His ICON sweatshirt. Or the striped fuzzy fisherman jumper.
But all of them, really.
You'd have endless cosplaying choices!

Aw, I love little book goblin Freya.
What does she like reading?
I didn't really read as a kid. Collected gravel instead =/
The reading addiction kicked in at the start of my twenties, when I dropped out of uni.
It started with challenging myself to read the Classics, which I did a lot of, but then read Gormenghast and I was fucked :)
Fantasy's my lady, and I am her devoted subject ^-^

I do remember having a musical Sesame Street book, though. I loved it >_<

Dex said...

I never make much effort with costumes (or most things in general) so a character with an endless array of interesting jumpers is perfect for me :D I like to think I would make an effort for you though, or just let you dress me up :)

Freya likes books where characters visit strange lands. She's also one of those kids who likes to be read to before she goes to sleep - she made me read 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' when she visited last time :)

Kid me would have loved a musical Sesame Street book! Probably gravel as well :) I can hardly imagine a time when you weren't immersed in fantasy books. I doubt there is anyone in the world who loves them more!

Louise Boyd said...

"Freya likes books where characters visit strange lands. She's also one of those kids who likes to be read to before she goes to sleep - she made me read 'Oh, the Places You'll Go!' when she visited last time :)"

>_<
She's a reader. A certified book-lover. She's got so much ahead of her!
You gotta tell me when she discovers YA Fantasy. It's gonna be a great day. A great fucking day.
I'm so jealoussssss and I can't stop awwing *-*

Dex said...

She really did make me smile when she visited. And you know I'm usually so miserable :) And I've still got to get her into Ghibli!

I also have a long weekend to look forward to as Friday is a public holiday. And the parents are going to Sandness. And I'm in the middle of one of my pancake phases, either crepes or waffles from the waffle maker so I'll probably be living on them this weekend :)

Today, for once, I surprised Kerry with some random trivia knowledge during our game - she's usually extremely unimpressed with me :) And it was thanks to Archer - 'Who am I, Karl Landsteiner, discover of blood groups' :)

Louise Boyd said...

It's what I've always said, tv's awesome for learning!
Although, I'd forgotten about Karl Landsteiner, so Dexterouses are also awesome for learning! :D

If Freya visits, you gotta make her a waffle.
Probably with ice cream.
I feel like she'd be a waffles and ice cream kinda girl.
Maybe with a side of doughnut *-*

Dex said...

I should watch more tv! That's probably why I know so little and you know so much. I don't know where my evenings disappear. By the time I've had my tea and done my exercises and whatever else needs done before I can sit down and not feel stressed, I feel so tired and it seems too late to do anything that requires any sort of focus :S

Do you ever find it difficult to decide what to watch? I have a feeling the answer is no but I could be wrong. I usually am :)

I bet Freya would love that :D Did I ever tell you we used to have a pancake house in Shetland? It was called Osla's and was pretty grotty but it was okay. Some of the combinations were quite sickly though. Obviously, being a sugar junkie, I didn't really mind but they used to call them really stupid names that I was too embarrassed to order so would go usually go for the classic which was just maple syrup and ice cream :)

Louise Boyd said...

How come your tiny island gets way more exciting things than my stupid tiny town?
A movie house? A pancake palace? Decent pub quizzes!
Why are you Lerwickians so damn special? 0_0
I'm glad I have birthday cake in my belly right now! Spiteful cake. It's spiteful cake!

You may be surprised to know that I often struggle to decide what to watch.
I'm a gut-feeling watcher, so sometimes nothing feels right and that's when I end up watching Schitt's Creek or The Office for the millionth time =/
And when I do know what to watch, I do it too fast and the cycle continues! >_<
I'm sorted right now, though. Stranger Things is back and I'm gonna devour it tomorrow ^-^

Oh, and I totally have the same time-suck problem.
I think when you hit your 20's, you somehow lose four hours from your day.
It's a bitchy phenomenon :)

Dex said...

Like tonight, how is it already half 7. Definitely a time-suck problem :) It's still so bright outside though. It doesn't really get dark here at all at this time of year. Not good for vampires :)

Spiteful birthday cake! I forgot, Emily's birthday is in May! What kind of cake was it, apart from spiteful? :)

I think we occasionally get things like a pancake cafe because we are so far away from everything that every once in a while someone says 'do you know what this place really needs...' :) I'm always jealous that your family are within driving distance of getting proper doughnuts :)

Tell me about Stranger Things when you've watched it. You know I'll probably only get around to it in a year or so :) Do you normally feel you have to finish tv series when you've started them or can you give up after a few episodes if it doesn't feel right?

May monthly part i! There's going to be a part ii?!

Louise Boyd said...

There's going to be a part iii *-*
I went a bit mental in May, it couldn't be helped, but it's all excellent stuff!

Logically, I shouldn't resent the fancy pancake house, or the magical cake fridge, because you live on a teeny island and I do indeed have more access to bake goods than you do.
But I do resent them.
Because cake is life 0_0
And I'm so hormonal right now, and it's making me nauseous, so I couldn't stomach any blackberry and lime cake tonight >_<
Stupid nausea. How dare it?!

We're getting weird as shit weather, right now.
Really sunny one minute, rainstorms the next.
It sucks!
Smells good, though.
The garden after a downpour is in my Top Ten Good Smelling Things.
A rained on Charlie is also on that list.
It's so weird that wet dog is a godawful stench but wet cat is genuinely delightful =/

Dex said...

3 parts?! It actually makes me happy that you find so many things to enjoy :) The video of Charlie hunting on top of the shed, when the branch makes a noise, I thought it sounded like Charlie had caught his prey and had just taken a massive bite out of it :D

Blackberry and lime cake - that sounds so damn summery! I hope you do feel better so you can have a double slice :) Someone told me the other day that there's a cake fridge near me in Fogralea which is just a couple of roads down Westerloch Drive. But Fogralea is a ridiculously long, steep road which winds its up the Staney Hill and I hear the cake fridge is right at the top. I'd take you on the adventure with me if you were here :)

The problem with sunny and rainstorms is that I never know if I need a jacket for when I walk to work :) Also, warm and wet makes the Clickimin path a minefield of midges! Does Charlie mind getting wet? :)

Dex said...

As I have been left on my own today, my food supplies have consisted of Aero and Viennese biscuits :S

Louise Boyd said...

I have no words.
You're either superhuman or not human at all.
Are you wearing a person-suit, Dexterous?

YOU HAVE ANOTHER, CLOSER, CAKE FRIDGE?!
...
I hate thee 0_0

Dex said...

Don't worry, I have some savoury food for today. And more sugar of course :)

Apparently there's only cake in it on Fridays. I haven't seen it myself - it could just be a trick to make me walk up a hill :)

Louise Boyd said...

Okay, here's the plan.
You get yourself a walkman, a copy of Hounds of Love, smash on Running Up That Hill and you GET YOUR ASS TO THE DAMN CAKE FRIDGE 0_0

Dex said...

Are you referencing walkmans and Running Up That Hill because of Stranger Things? Kerry said it was used in the new season :)

Classic Car Show at Clickimin this weekend. The rest of my family have all been for a look but I'm too lazy :) Did I ever mention that we have a classic car? A silver Jaguar (I have no idea what year). We used to put it in the show but the thing has been in the garage for so long that some serious work is needing done before it is fit for public display again!

Louise Boyd said...

I am indeed referencing, Stranger Things, and I feel you need to be a part of the chaos.
But you're not running from scary things, you're running toward cake! With a great soundtrack to your uphill plight!
...
Just get the fucking cake, Dex <_<

Classic Car Show.
You have a Jaguar.
...
WHO ARE YOU?!
0_0

Dex said...

Someone who is completely uninterested in classic cars and would have actively argued against my parents buying one if I hadn't been a kid at the time :) Even as a kid, everything seemed so pointless to me. I guess some things never change. I never know what to do with money :)

Do you remember the Chromatics cover? That would probably be more my speed :D

Do you ever have one of those days or weeks where you feel you can't relate to anyone or anything? Maybe I'm just having some kind of existential crisis :)

Louise Boyd said...

You can have Chromatics, I'll take Placebo.
Early noughties grunge pop forever! >_<

If you're having an existential crisis, then so am I, and most Millennials.
I think it's because we're that weird generation that isn't as shit as the Boomers but way too tired to really give a crap like Gen Z.
I just wanna sleep and read but simultaneously go places.
It's very frustrating 0_0

Dex said...

I have such a knowledge gap when it comes to early noughties music. It's almost hard to believe I spent my teenage years in that decade. I have no idea what I did during most of it :)

Where would you like to go?

Louise Boyd said...

Seeing as I'm watching Black Sails, I'm gonna say Nassau.
So much blue water and multicoloured buildings.
If I could teleport, I'd be there already *-*

Dex said...

I think Nassau would be too hot for me. 15c outside is about my ideal temperature. So Shetland on a very nice day. They are very rare :)

For some reason, I think I have been almost entirely cured of the travel bug :S Even places I used to really want to go, like cities I wanted to explore, it all seems a bit too much effort these days. Am I extremely lazy? Don't answer that :)

Also, I'm worried that if I went on my own, I'd just check into some large, corporate hotel, stay in my room the whole time, and order room service :) I would probably need someone to arrange all the activities and drag me around to see places. The downside of that is we'd end up killing each other :)

Louise Boyd said...

15C?!
That's practically freezing 0_0
20C minimum, but with a breeze.
I never get to wear t shirts >_<

I think you overestimate my abilities to be proactive, let alone organised =/
And we wouldn't kill each other, just require separate rooms so that when your breathing starts to make me murdery, I can retreat before I do something criminal :)
...
Everyone's breathing annoys me eventually, don't take offence ^-^

Dex said...

I think I could just about enjoy 20C with a breeze :)

Oh, I wasn't thinking of you. I would go on holiday with you in a heartbeat. I was thinking of everyone else in the world. You've spent almost 10 years talking to me even though I've never had anything interesting to say so I think a week away together would be nothing :)

That's okay, I totally get the breathing thing. And noisy eating! For some reason, at work I'm able to tune out to the point of being totally oblivious to what is going on around me (much to the annoyance of everyone else), but at home I'm bothered by the slightest creak of someone moving around! Maybe I'm just more focused on what I'm doing at work so that I don't get distracted easily. I do get very bored at home even though I dream of doing nothing :)

Do you ever feel bored? It seems like you're always finding interesting things to fill the time.

Louise Boyd said...

I kinda don't let myself get bored, because then I think too much, and that way leads madness.
Which is why if I'm not reading, I'm watching tv, or listening to music, or trawling Goodreads, YouTube, Instagram, etc.
Thus why my monthlies are full of so much stuff *-*
It's kind of annoying, though. Sometimes I'd like to just sit and be at peace.
But oh well! I like all the pretty things I drown my brain in, so it's not much of a hardship :)

Y'know what I want, what would be really nice, is renting a house somewhere and just relaxing. No trips out, maybe just a few visits to meander through a nice town, trying the local ice cream shop, and then wandering back to lounge around in the sun.
That sounds like the perfect holiday.
If there happened to be a beach and a puppy to play with as well, that'd be bloody dandy ^-^

Dex said...

That would be the perfect holiday! I might just do that one of these days and ask you to come with me :) I suppose the 2 weeks in July in Sandness will have to do for now. Too bad there's no ice cream shop or Maggot. Hopefully I'll get a few nice sunsets.

Did I tell you my mum was planning on retiring after the summer? Then my parents are planning to spend several months in the Philippines. It's going to be very weird. I might have to pretend to be a proper adult :S

I think you have the right idea of avoiding boredom. Probably why you are so clever! I think your brain can cope with a lot more activity than mine :) Do you have quite a set routine of what you do during each part of the day, or is it just whatever you feel like doing at the time?

Louise Boyd said...

Parents being parents is always kinda bewildering. I kind of expected them to sorta remain the same forever =/
It's so weird when you realise your parents are real people, not just the big ones who feed and hug you! 0_0

I wouldn't say I have a schedule but I am a creature of habit, and I get a little cranky when something fucks with it.
Especially mealtime.
Don't separate me from food, I will attack x_x

Dex said...

Do you have any good snack foods in the house at the moment? I'm only asking because I have none and I'm craving sugar :) I think a trip to the shops is called for tonight if the weather improves. The weather hasn't exactly been amazing here this last week but today has been our first day of proper rain for a while and Tesco have these chocolate mousse eclairs that I'm after :)

Louise Boyd said...

Chocolate Mousse eclairs sound amazing, but I wouldn't walk through the storms we've been having to get one =/
Fucking Scottish summers >_<
We have plenty of food in the house, an inordinate amount of Bounties, but nothing I'm really craving.
If I was in charge of shopping, I'd come back with waaaaay different stuff.
I'd definitely buy a dragon fruit. Never had one and I really want to try!
Also, honey Cheerios.
My shopping might only entail of bread, cereal and exotic fruit ^-^

Dex said...

I have some Crunchy Nut cereal. I'm not sure if that would do?

The only thing I know about dragon fruit is that sometimes the inside is white, and other times it is purple.

You've been getting storms?!

Louise Boyd said...

Not my favourite cereal, but you wouldn't know that by the way I spoon it down by the bowlful :)
If cereal poker was a thing, I'd be a fucking marvel, no one would ever be able to tell what my high cereal card was.
I even like fucking raisin bran =/

We've been getting wicked storms. I opened the door yesterday to look for Charlie and lightning struck.
I never see lightning!
It was very cool 0_0
And luckily Charlie appeared not long after, very soggy, and a little bewildered. Little man doesn't like loud noises :(
He got a treat instantly.

Dex said...

I thought you didn't like raisins... Then again, neither do I and I'll happily eat bread and butter pudding :) Do you eat cereal out of a very deep bowl? :)

Poor Charlie. At least he was okay. I probably looked much the same after my walk home today :) I'm jealous you got to see lightning!

Louise Boyd said...

I love raisins. You hate raisins. I eat them by the handful ^-^
Cereal-wise, Raisin Wheats are basically my religion.
I'd have them at my last meal! And yes, in a very deep bowl! Or a very large mug. I really like eating cereal out of a mug.
But I wouldn't eat Bread and Butter Pudding =/ Dessert bread is odd to me.
Unless it's Summer Pudding!
...
I think I'm hungry! >_<

Did you return home as a drowned rat, m'dear?
I hope you at least had a jacket with a hood.
...
I sound like a parent. Fuck sake >_<

Dex said...

Very much like a drowned rat :) I did wear a jacket and hood. But I like walking with my hood down when it's misty rain because it makes my face feel fresh. Such a weirdo! I'm sure you would have given me trouble when I got home :)

You love raisins! I feel like such a bad friend for not remembering that :S You still don't like Christmas Cake, right? Or have I totally imagined that as well?! I wonder if you can still get those Sun Maid raisins in the little boxes?

Shredded Wheat used to be the one cereal we always had in the house when I was growing up. In winter, we would sometimes pour hot milk on it instead. Obviously, I would add sugar as well :)

Dex said...

The biggest danger for people like me is mistaking raisin biscuits for chocolate chip :)

Louise Boyd said...

The greatest cookie betrayal!
I ate a very tiny chocolate chip biscotti today. Thumb-sized and delicious.
I'm one of those psychopaths that has no respect for their teeth and bites down without dipping them in anything first.
This is perhaps the reason I have nightmares about all my teeth crumbling like polos 0_0

Wait a hot damn minute... hot milk on cereal?!
...
I think you just blew my mind.
I ate all my cereal and can't try, thoughhhhhh >_<
Would it be obscene to eat a bowl of tiny biscotti with hot milk and call it cereal?
I wouldn't be struck down by the cereal gods for that, would I?

Ps. I love Christmas Cake, I hate Christmas Pudding. It's a texture thing =/

Dex said...

I don't think so. The closer the cereal is to dessert the better as far as I'm concerned :) But I don't know if I would advise the hot milk on anything other than shredded wheat or weetabix thought. You'll have to let me know if you try :)

All the revelations about raisins and Christmas cake have turned my world upside down :D Where did you get the mini chocolate chip biscotti? Also, what exactly is a biscotti? :S I very rarely dip my biscuits either. Only rich tea into a cup of tea on occasion. Maybe that's why I needed a root canal a few years ago :) I've heard that some people can drink their tea through kit kats like straws. Sounds like madness to me!

Louise Boyd said...

A biscotti is a twice baked biscuit, so it's absurdly crunchy and really should be dipped.
I had another today and dunked it in the mater's coffee foam when she wasn't looking :)
Much better and I wasn't fearing for my teeth. There might be something in this biscuit-dunking game o_O
And you absolutely can drink tea through a KitKat! And Penguins!
It's very messy, though =/ And you're always in danger of the biscuit crumbling into mush.
Not. For. Amateurs!
And I haven't done it in years.
Guess what my last few Tim Tams are gonna bed used for? :)

Dex said...

I'm going to have to seriously re-consider my professional status as a biscuit eater in light of this new information. I feel like a downright novice :)

That's how I like to imagine you, sneaking frosting, surreptitiously dipping your biscotti in other people's coffee... :) I think that would be a nice holiday - quiet cafe, good book, coffee, biscotti, people watching... I imagine I would like that.

I'm very glad you still have a few Tim Tams left :) I will buy you some more one of these days.

Louise Boyd said...

I am the biscuit grand master, and you are my second in command.
The chocolate Digestive to my Tunnock's Teacake :)

This might make me weird, but I'm not a big café fan when there aren't any books.
I don't know how to comport myself when there's only people to engage with =/
I will suffer through it for food, though.
If there's a giant muffin in front of me, I'm significantly easier to handle human.
I still remember that photo you showed me of you and Freya in Starbucks or Costa or somewhere!, and she was still super tiny and biting the heads of gingerbread men.
Cutest. Girl. Alive.
Factual. Cannot be denied!
Also, I feel like you had a dark denim jacket on? And I really liked it. Would get stolen if I had the chance :)

Dex said...

The chocolate Digestive to your Tunnock's Teacake - that's one of the nicest things someone has said to me :)

That's still one of my favourite photos. We were in a Starbucks in Union Square in Aberdeen. Thank you for reminding me of it :D Yes, she was biting the head off a gingerbread man and was about to bop me on the nose :) I think that was the last time I was out of Shetland!

It was a dark denim shirt/jacket. I have a very boring dress sense. Dark and plain most of the time :) Of course I would let you steal it even though every time I see a photo of you, I think how nice your clothes are :)

I think cafes and bookshops really go together :) I've only been there once but there was a second hand bookshop/cafe in Aberdeen called Books and Beans which I would like to visit again.

Louise Boyd said...

I'm now determined to think of the perfect name for a books/coffee shop.
This will take some time. Maybe eternity. But I will figure it out *-*

Dex said...

I bet it would be an obscure reference to something that only a few people would get :)

Maggot, I've never felt as lied to about the weather as I do today! Why do forecasts pretend that we might even get some sun when they know full well it's going to be grey and showery?! You can probably tell I've got some washing outside on the line :)

Does your family dry clothes outside? I used to think it was something everyone did but apparently not.

Dex said...

Okay, so the weather did clear up and my washing did dry. Sorry for being so dramatic :)

I think this is a new low for me, talking about my laundry...

Louise Boyd said...

I mean... everybody's gotta wash their clothes, right?
And we do indeed hang ours outside. The tumble dryer's more of a winter/shit weather appliance.
I think you sent us your rain. It was sunny all day and now it's pouring.
Hrumph.
And I think it's meant to rain for the rest of the week!
I hate Scotland x_x
There is cheesecake, meringues and Buenos in the house, though, so I'll contain my bratty feelings about the weather with sugar.

That's how I cope with the bad weather too :) What kind of cheesecake is it? I suppose it would be really terrible to put those 3 things together to create some kind of monster dessert :)

I wanted the washing to dry so I could sleep in fresh bed clothes. It's one of the few things I get excited about :) We don't actually have a tumble dryer! If the weather is bad, we just have to hang our clothes on the rack upstairs. One thing for Shetland at least, it has good drying weather :)

I'm sorry I sent you our weather. I suppose we still have July and August to hopefully make up for it :) Do you get mist in Blair?

Louise Boyd said...

It was vanilla cheesecake and Em made summer fruits curd to go with it.
So fucking good.
But now I've just remembered that Bueno cheesecake is a thing and I want it.
If I was a witch, I'd magic myself food all the time *-*

I shouldn't have complained about the weather, it's so muggy, I'm wilting -_-

Dex said...

I'd be able to pretend it was summer if I had a dessert like that to keep me company :) It feels cold here today!

How do you make a Bueno cheesecake?!

Louise Boyd said...

I just found a recipe for Bueno cheesecake where they put individual pockets? parcels? of the Bueno IN the cheesecake.
...
My brain is exploding *-*

Dex said...

Birthday cake candidate? It would make me very jealous :)

Do you still have adventures in bread making?

Louise Boyd said...

I'll add it to the dessert list.
The list, however, is a page long.
It's a very big decision >_<
I am hardcore craving Summer Pudding, though...

I no longer make bread.
I wanna make bread.
But the only time I could do it would be in the evening, andddddd nope. That's when I lie down ^-^

Dex said...

I do love your list making :D

Making bread must be such a long process. Besides, I know you do 10x more things in a day than I could ever imagine doing.

I went out for a meal tonight (belated leaving party for someone at work) and I chose completely the wrong thing. Chilli cripsy chicken ramen sounds delicious but it is not. For a start, putting crispy chicken in broth makes it horrible and soggy. Second, the broth was way too spicy (it's never a good idea to eat spicy food when you are with other people). Third, the noodles were impossible to eat with any sense of decorum. I was so embarrassed I just gave up! I looked so pathetic that the person next to me gave me some of their food which was so much nicer. I had serious food envy :)

Dex... hate to break it to you but I really, really, really don't 0_0
I'm basically a cat.
Eat, sleep, groom.
You go out to dinner!
I mean, it sounded terrible, but still!
The person that gave you some food, though? That's an awesome human.
Did you at least get dessert?

Dex said...

She actually thought her food was too spicy but it was nothing compared to that bloody broth! :)

No, I didn't even get dessert. No one else was getting dessert and I couldn't be that one person - I already feel way too self conscious eating in public. I should have just gotten a pancake for my main course. That's acceptable, right? :) Did you have any dessert last night?

And watch tv. And read books. And find a million amazing things online. And pay attention to Charlie :)

Louise Boyd said...

I bet there was chilli oil in your broth.
Em puts it on her Ramen and I swear she's part dragon.

The audacity of non-dessert ordering people. What's wrong with them? Who hurt them? Were they the kind of kids that preferred an apple for dessert rather than a Wagon Wheel?
I bet they were (minus the food-sharer, she gets a free pass for life for feeding the Dexmonster).
Ugh, disgusting.
I think you should only eat pancakes in protest for the rest of the weekend ^-^
And I'll continue to eat tiny Biscotti, Buenos, and Toblerone.
All chocolate should be triangular!

Dex said...

She sounds like my sibling :) They only time I've ever seen him defeated by spice was a family holiday to Thailand. He ordered a sort of curried soup in our hotel and I swear his ears went red! :)

We didn't even have starters. I thought the basic rule was starter/mains or mains/desserts - admittedly, I'd prefer all 3 :) If I'd known it was going to be a dessert free night, I would have gotten mozzarella sticks or something :) I almost feel like going back there so I can do things right and get a better main course and some dessert. I wish you were here so I'd have someone to go with :)

Where are you getting all this chocolate from?!

Louise Boyd said...

Secret parallel chocolate universe.
I give them apples, they give me sugar.
Fair exchange, methinks ^-^

WHO WERE THESE PEOPLE?!
It's one or the other!
What's the point of going out to eat if you're not gonna get the appropriate amount of food to compensate for the social trauma?!
I am incensed >_<

Dex said...

Be careful, Lilliputty. The secret parallel chocolate universe might be like the other world in Coraline. I don't want you to get trapped there by a demon.

I think the answer is that they were not our people :)

Louise Boyd said...

Y'know, I always kinda thought Coraline would be better off with her Other Mother.
Her real parents were neglectful shits =/
Button eyes weren't that big of a deal in comparison!

Dex said...

I sometimes wish I could escape to a parallel universe.

I have a fortnight's annual leave starting on Monday. I thought I would drive out to Sandness early in the week and stay there for a few days, maybe even longer than that. I have plenty of things to watch and read so I shouldn't be too bored.

Louise Boyd said...

Did I finally do it? Did I turn you into a bonafide reader? :D

Dex said...

Yes, you did! I'm sorry it took so long!

But I don't think you would approve of my methods. I've been putting off telling you this because I was worried about how you'd react but I bought a kindle a few months ago... can we still be friends?

Louise Boyd said...

Oh, I got over my elitist bullshit when I discovered Kindle offered like a bazillion 99p deals on books and there are free deals all> the time
I'll sell out for cheap books ^-^

Dex said...

It'll be useful for taking to Sandness at least. You still buy plenty of physical books, don't you? Even though you're practically sleeping in the middle of a library at this point :)
